In Final Fantasy XIV: Evercold will bring many changes – including our loyal Chocobos. Many of us have invested countless hours into them, and now they will have a whole new purpose. MyMMO editor Alex is excited that the effort has finally paid off.
My Chocobo and I are connected by many hundreds of hours of gameplay. There were numerous attempts to painstakingly give him the right color with the right food. I had to worry for hours whether every fruit truly counted. Often one would find out: Nope, instead of gray, your bird is now red – congratulations! So starting all over again.
That alone consumed many hours of my life. When he finally had the right color, it was off to the great, open world. As a duo, we tackled many FATEs and defeated numerous treasure map enemies and hunting targets. How many onions and Gizar leaves this bird has devoured is also not trivial.
When I finally had him at his maximum level, a certain emptiness set in. Did I really torture this incredibly sweet little guy just for a few pieces of content?
Because I hardly played that content afterwards. Sure, for every update that brought new content, occasionally, and I still like to use him as a mount regularly, but I wouldn’t have had to level him for hours for that.
With Evercold, the feathered friends will now get a new task and a comprehensive overhaul, making all the effort worthwhile at last.
Conquer dungeons together with your Chocobos
What changes does Evercold bring for the Chocobos? With the release of the first update of the Evercold expansion (Patch 8.1), it will be possible in Final Fantasy XIV to take your feathered companions into dungeons. This way, you can complete dungeons with a buddy and your two Chocobos without needing any additional players.
Although their level system will also be revised, your previously achieved ranks are supposed to be retained and adapted to the new system. So you don’t have to fear that your painstakingly invested hours were for nothing. If you have fully leveled your Chocobo, he will also receive a high rank in the new system, if not the highest.
The breeding system and all abilities, as well as the function of Gizar leaves, are also set to be overhauled. However, how exactly that will look has not yet been revealed. And whether you will be able to play all dungeons with your Chocobos in the future is currently unclear. For now, you will likely be able to play the dungeons of Evercold in this way.

What advantages arise from co-op? By being able to take your birds into dungeons now, you can easily fill in missing classes for your duo – somewhat like the “Side by Side” system, where you can run dungeons with NPCs, only instead with a fellow player of your choice.
This also creates a great opportunity for players who do not feel comfortable in foreign groups but still want to play with a friend. Cautious players will soon have no excuse when someone asks them if they want to run one of the new dungeons. My friends are certainly no longer safe from me.
Furthermore, this gives you another chance to admire your beautiful splendid bird and another incentive to take good care of him.
What do you think of the change? Have you, like me, already invested hundreds of hours into your feathered friend and are now as happy as a clam? Or are you not interested at all? Feel free to let us know in the comments!
Another change also leads MyMMO editor Jasmin Beverungen to rigorously drag her boyfriend back to Eorzea soon. Because his excuse will also be debunked in the future: Final Fantasy XIV gets a new feature that means my partner has no excuse to skip the game anymore
