The manager of a gas station wanted to dispose of the old hardware of the surveillance camera. An employee asked if he could keep it and was happy about valuable technology.
Which hardware is it about? On Reddit, the user KBU420 reports that he was able to secure old hardware at his job that had been used for the gas station’s security system. When he opened the case, he was in for a nice surprise. He writes:
He writes: “My boss was just about to throw away his old security system and I asked if I could have it. Opened it up and there was a 6TB hard drive … and then three more!!!”
Although this is used hardware, KBU420 can look forward to a nice bargain. A new 6 terabyte hard drive from Western Digital Purple costs about 300 euros. Four hard drives would then cost nearly 1,200 euros.
“You are really a lucky guy”
How does the community react to the find? They are especially happy about it, as evidenced by the more than 3,800 likes and many of the 170 comments on Reddit.
- OrigamiShiro writes: “You are really a lucky guy.”
- Ad-fundum69 adds: “Free is always good. Now check the operating time of the hard drives. They could still be good for a few backups.”
- Stryfe2010 provides a tip: “Make sure you use CrystalDiskInfo to check the condition of these drives before loading important data onto them. Especially because they are surveillance hard drives that are 10 years old. This applies if you want to use them as storage drives.”
- lkl34 jokes: “I would first check what’s on it; maybe you can find something for blackmail to get a raise.”
By the way, KBU420 responds to the last comment that he works the night shift at the gas station: “The main person who could be blackmailed with this footage is probably ME!!!” However, it is unclear whether the boss has deleted the contents of the hard drives before he wanted to dispose of them.
What would you do with so much hard drive space? Feel free to let us know in the comments! Even old RAM has become valuable. So valuable that some users are now even climbing into the trash to salvage old PCs. You can learn more about it here: A user climbs and digs through the trash to save valuable RAM and SSDs
