The director of Clair Obscure: Expedition 33, Guillaume Broche, is a huge fan of Attack on Titan. He loves the anime so much that it even inspired him for his own role-playing game.
What did he take inspiration from? At an event in Japan, the development team of Sandfall Interactive talked about their role-playing game, which was awarded Game of the Year last year. During this, CEO and Creative Director Guillaume Broche admits that they took inspiration from one aspect of the anime Attack on Titan.
I believe one of the animes that inspired the story of “Expedition 33” was “Attack on Titan”. I really like the idea of a group of heroes fighting together, and I especially love the uniforms. When you see a character from “Attack on Titan”, you immediately recognize them as a character from “Attack on Titan” because of the uniform. I wanted to incorporate that into “Expedition 33” so that the game is recognizable just by the uniforms.
And you can see that in Expedition 33. Here, the main characters all wear a black uniform provided by the expedition. They truly are a recognizable feature of the game – even though the iconic outfits with the baguette are also associated with the game.
Another inspiration, according to Leading Character and Concept Artist Alan Reynaud, was the anime Bleach. He took inspiration from Bleach for the character designs.
The director is a huge fan of Attack on Titan
What connects the director to Attack on Titan? Broche even goes on to say that he is currently rewatching Attack on Titan. He hasn’t watched the anime for six years and is currently in Season 4. This is the last and final season of the anime.
According to his own statement, he is almost at the end, and the anime is simply a masterpiece for him.
In addition, he admits in the interview that he is also a big fan of Ghibli animes. They were a huge part of his childhood, especially Spirited Away. He has watched the film 50 times already, and it is also a masterpiece.
