She has many names, but most know her primarily for her magic: Tasha. Hardly anyone has shaped Dungeons & Dragons as much as she has, but very few know what really lies behind her.
Anyone who delves a bit deeper into Dungeons & Dragons has at least heard her name. Be it through the supplemental rulebook “Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything”, her iconic spells like “Tasha’s Hideous Laughter”, or in the context of a campaign.
We are, of course, talking about the famous and legendary archmage Tasha (short for Natasha). Yet, her influence on the multiverse is broader than one might suspect. She has called many planes her home and lived various lives.
To ensure you know the story that lies behind her, we have compiled her biography for you.
Warning! Spoiler alert: At this point, we issue a clear warning if you want to play unprejudiced the campaign book “The Wild Beyond the Witchlight”, Vecna: Eve of Ruin, or various adventures in Greyhawk. Because Tasha’s story cannot be completely told without addressing these twists. You have been warned.
Adopted by a Witch, Destined for Greatness
Daughter of an old witch, demonologist, witch queen, mother of some half-demons, and archfey – all of this is and was Tasha. Born with the name Natasha on Oerth, she was adopted by the famous archwitch Baba Yaga. She was the first to recognize her magical potential and raised her under her wings.
She earned the nickname “the Dark” for both her raven-black hair and her penchant for necromancy. Baba Yaga took her on as her personal student and shaped her foundation of arcane magic and her talent for curses.
In her youth, she joined an adventurer group under the name Tasha and invented her first own spell with “Tasha’s Hideous Laughter”.
During her travels, she repeatedly encountered the famous archmage Mordenkainen, who regarded her not only as a sort of rival in the art of arcane magic but also as a good friend who could occasionally be challenged to a well-fought game of chess.
However, her hungry search for forbidden arcane knowledge soon drove her in another direction.
Tasha, Iggwilv or Zybilna?
As she grew older, she rose not only to archmage but also to witch queen of Oerth, fully dedicating herself to the study of demonology under the name Iggwilv. Through her pursuit of knowledge, she authored the “Demononomicon”, the most comprehensive work on the depths of the Abyss and its demons to this day.
During her experiments with various demons, she nearly became megalomaniacal and dedicated herself to the summoning and subjugation of the demon lord Graz’zt in order to acquire his dark knowledge as well.
This show of power developed into a passionate, but equally marked by rivalry and betrayal, love affair. A love-hate relationship, so to speak. Together, Tasha and Graz’zt fathered the half-demon Iuz, who later became one of the most feared dread figures of the world of Greyhawk.
Eventually, however, she longed to leave it all behind and begin a new life in the Feywild. Her new identity as the archfey Zybilna was born.
A Realm of Her Own in the Feywild and a Peaceful New Purpose
In the fairy realm, she created her own domain of joy with the Prismeer. At its center, she built her Palace of Heart’s Desire to rule and protect her realm from there.
Over time, she proved worthy of the fairy realm and became an archfey herself, turning to more peaceful studies rather than her previous pursuit of power in demonology. She revealed herself to be a good ruler and was more than popular in her realm.
However, she could not entirely escape her past, as the Feywild is also home to many witches – including her sisters. Baba Yaga’s daughters Bavlorna Blightstraw, Skabatha Nightshade, and Endelyn Moongrave did not think much of her development and used Zybilna’s personal cauldron to freeze her and all the residents of the palace in time.
It is said that brave adventurers found their way to Prismeer through a mystical carnival and freed Zybilna and her realm from its terrible fate. In gratitude, the archfey granted her saviors their greatest heart’s desire.
Where her path as Zybilna will lead her remains uncertain. Whether she will continue to stand for good in the future and has found her final home in the Feywild remains to be seen.
However, in 2027, an adventure will be released that focuses on her time in Greyhawk, more precisely, on that of her daughter Drelnza: D&D: In the new adventure you fight Drelnza, a powerful vampire lord and daughter of a legendary mage
Tasha also has a daughter named Drelnza, raising the question of her father to this day. While it might seem that Graz’zt is the one, his fatherhood is rather unlikely given the different times.
Her first attempts to subjugate Graz’zt led to the collapse of her realm in Greyhawk, after which she fled. Her power-hungry studies and experiments constantly attracted new enemies, causing her to retreat to other planes, such as Niflheim in Hades, to create distance between herself and her turmoil.
Eventually, however, she longed to leave it all behind and begin a new life in the Feywild. Her new identity as the archfey Zybilna was born.
