What kind of class is it? With the Amazon, Diablo 4 receives an iconic warrior that veterans will recognize from Diablo 2. She was one of the original five starting classes and was primarily specialized in bows, crossbows, spears, and throwing spears. In Diablo 4, she expands the class selection and introduces the throwing spear as a completely new weapon type alongside the bow.
According to Blizzard, the foundation of the Amazon rests on three central pillars: combat expertise, athletic endurance, and mythical magic. Primarily, she is an extremely disciplined warrior who relies on the mystical connection to her Askari ancestors and Amazon sisters in battle.
Her various facets are defined by four archetypes that dictate her basic playstyles. You can learn more about these archetypes and the gameplay on page 2.
Amazon Comes with a “Gender Lock”
With what limitation does she come? The Amazon will be the first class in Diablo 4 to feature a “gender lock”—she can only be created as a female body type in the character editor. This reverts Blizzard to a principle from Diablo 1 and Diablo 2, where all classes were bound to a fixed gender for lore reasons. This is simply due to the lore: Amazons are a tribe of warrior women who lived and fought without men.
As a nomadic warrior of the Askari from the regions near the Southern Sea, the Amazon is accustomed to a tough, independent life. Constant conflicts on her travels have made her a resilient defender of her people. In battle, she impresses with versatility: in addition to mastering archery, she also perfectly handles the spear, throwing spear, and direct melee combat.
The vision for the Amazon assumed real forms during Lord of Hatred, Blizzard explained at BlizzCon. The team realized that there was a huge opportunity—after all, the Amazons live in Skovos, the setting of the expansion. In the first half of 2027, the warrior will thus make her entrance into Diablo 4.
