About a year ago, Blizzard changed how the Battle Pass works in Diablo 4. Even before that, there was criticism of the system, and after the change, even more – but now it has gone so far that players wish for the also unpopular first version back.
Since Season 8 in April 2025, there are the Reliquaries that replace the Battle Pass in Diablo 4. The idea behind it is simple and actually logical: instead of grinding through 100 tiers in a pass, most of which you don’t want, you select the rewards yourself.
However, the Reliquaries received criticism even before release, as players calculated a hidden price increase with them. The number of Cosmetics received in the new system is lower, and there is also significantly less Platinum returned (200 instead of 666).
The players’ fears have since been confirmed, and Reliquaries are still unpopular. Meanwhile, the aversion has even gone so far that some would rather have the old Battle Pass back, even though that one already had to deal with backlash.
“At least you got a lot of currency back”
Threads on the corresponding topic keep appearing on Reddit. One of the newer ones has over 1,100 upvotes within a few hours (on Reddit). There, it is stated in the comments by user DiabloTrumpet:
The old Battle Pass was a 4/10. The items were not impressive in any way, but at least you got a lot of currency back. The current Battle Pass is a 1/10; I have never been close to being tempted to spend money on it.

The greed is off-putting, agrees a user. After all, it is not just the paid Reliquaries in the Battle Pass, but also through collaborations like recently with the “Legends of Azeroth.” The Cosmetics are already expensive anyway.
While some wish that Diablo could do entirely without a Battle Pass, one user comments: At least there were cool things for free in the old system; today everything feels somewhat jumbled. There is even praise for some old Cosmetics, such as for Season 2 with the Vampire Set or Season 6 with the free Pirate Set (which you can see in the title image).
Whether the Reliquary system will change again at some point is uncertain. With the upcoming Season 14, there is definitely nothing planned in that regard. Instead, Blizzard wants to adjust the best items: Diablo 4 changes the Mythics with Season 14, allowing you to carry more Oboluses
