In the action role-playing game Project Windless, you take on the role of a gigantic, sword-swinging rooster. This unusual decision was made primarily because literally every playtester wanted to play this character.
What kind of game is this? Project Windless is an open-world action RPG based on the popular Korean novel series “The Legend of the Tear-Drinking Bird” (English: “The Bird That Drinks Tears”) by Lee Youngdo. The high-fantasy world is deeply rooted in Korean mythology and folklore.
As a so-called Rekon warrior, you dive into a mythical age and explore the kingdom of Arajit, founded by your species. And this said warrior is… a massive rooster.

“One thing is certain: I want to play this character”
What’s with the rooster? During the “State of Play” in February 2026, Krafton first showcased Windless. The most striking feature was the protagonist, as it is essentially a human rooster slashing through hordes of enemies with swords.
Patrik Méthé, head of Krafton Montreal, revealed in an interview with PC Gamer that the studio was hoping for such surprised reactions. It was planned that the hero would cause a stir. However, the fact that people wanted to play exactly that as their character surprised Méthé nonetheless.
In fact, literally everyone who was interviewed for a job on the game desperately wanted to play this rooster. Méthé recalls the candidates:
When the candidates left, they said: ‘I hope to hear from you, but one thing is certain: I want to be able to play this character.’ All of them. Really all – and we said to ourselves: ‘Okay.’
In this context, the developer emphasizes that the protagonist is not a “guy in a costume,” but an independent being with specific attributes and abilities that a human would not possess.
The Rekon serves as the legendary hero king in Windless. Krafton considered the hero king the right choice because he is a mythical character. Remember him, but no one from that time is alive anymore. His story takes place in a 1,000-year gap before the novels, which gives the developers some flexibility. They did not want to copy the book too rigidly to avoid restricting the fun of the game.
When will Windless be released? A specific release date for the action RPG has not yet been announced. The reveal trailer only confirms that the game is in development for the PlayStation 5. We will keep you updated on further announcements.
