With the latest update for Call of Duty: Warzone and CoD Modern Warfare, Infinity Ward has quietly provided the Battle Royale on the new Xbox Series X with 120 FPS. However, the situation is different on the PS5.
For many players, the Warzone experience continues now or in the foreseeable future on the next-gen consoles. Microsoft’s Xbox Series X has been available since November 10, and the PlayStation 5 since November 12, but only in some countries. Germany and Europe will have to wait until November 19 for Sony’s new console.
Many players are traditionally particularly focused on the frame rate, that is, how many frames per second (FPS) Warzone now offers on the new hardware. Because more FPS ultimately provide a smoother experience, which is especially important for many players in fast shooters like Call of Duty. For serious shooter players, 60 FPS are considered the absolute minimum standard. So how does it look on the new console generation?
Warzone now runs at 120 FPS on Xbox Series X
What’s the deal with the 120 FPS in Warzone? In short: Warzone is already being played on next-gen. Some players on the Series X have noticed that Warzone, as well as Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, are running there at 4K resolution and 120 FPS.
What’s going on? The exciting part: It is assumed that the change came with the last major update 1.29, though it was not mentioned in the patch notes. However, the hardware experts from Digital Foundry took this as an opportunity and examined the performance of the Xbox Series X and the PlayStation 5 in Warzone.
And indeed: On the Xbox Series X, 120 FPS are apparently aimed for, while the new Xbox fluctuates between 100 and 120 FPS. So there is a decent performance boost compared to the last generation.
How much FPS does Warzone offer on the PS5?
Here, the experts from Digital Foundry were puzzled. Because on the PS5, Warzone currently offers 60 FPS. According to their own statements, they have tried several methods to verify this, but each time found 60 FPS. On the PlayStation 5, you can also choose between quality and performance mode, but even in performance mode, Warzone ran there at 60 frames. There is also no way to activate the 120 FPS yourself.
In short, my Digital Foundry: If there is a 120 FPS support in the game for the PS5, it is not yet accessible. However, Warzone runs on the PS5 as a PS4 game through the backward compatibility feature. So it might be due to that.
What do the developers say? In response to inquiries from Digital Foundry, neither Activision nor Infinity Ward has commented on this so far.
Furthermore, the experts are surprised why the developers have generally said nothing about the 120 FPS for this successful shooter. This stands in stark contrast to Destiny 2, which proudly announced 120 FPS for PvP on next-gen and delighted many fans.
However, it might be due to the fact that recently the new Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War has launched and they might not want to distract from the launch of the new CoD with such a message.
Currently, based on the tests, it is confirmed that Warzone is indeed already running at 120 FPS on the Xbox Series X, but at 60 FPS on the PS5. Whether 120 FPS will soon be offered for Warzone on the PS5 is still unknown. However, some speculate that it could happen with the integration of CoD Cold War into Warzone.
