Before the animation studio Gainax ventured into Neon Genesis Evangelion, they first impressed the audience with an anime masterpiece. Unfortunately, this is not so easy to obtain.
What kind of anime is this? Before Hideaki Anno and his colleagues became known as the animation studio Gainax, they produced an animated short film for the science fiction conventions Daicon III and Daicon IV in 1981 and 1983, respectively.
The animation team designed the opening films for the conventions. The first film features a girl experiencing an unusual adventure. She encounters robots and other strange beings, ultimately finding herself aboard a spaceship made from a Japanese radish, also known as Daikon.
The big twist, however, came with the second film. It recycles some scenes from the first film, ultimately revealing that the young girl has grown into an adult woman. However, she suddenly dons a bunny costume and battles mechs.
The anime is over seven minutes long, and you can watch it in a high-resolution, remastered version on the YouTube channel of tntboom21.
Anime Does Not Care About Copyrights
What is special about this anime? If you watch the video, you might recognize other famous characters from different franchises. The bunny girl suddenly engages in a lightsaber battle with Darth Vader or lifts Transformers into the air. Even Batman, Superman, and many other characters unexpectedly appear in the video.
The creators of the video were completely unconcerned about whether they violated any copyrights. This is also the reason why the anime is so rare today.
It is likely nearly impossible to secure all these licenses for this clip. That’s why laserdiscs featuring the anime can often go for around €850, as you can see here on eBay.
It is no wonder that from this creative clip, an entire animation studio was founded, which was responsible for one of the best animes of the 90s. Unfortunately, the studio is now bankrupt.
