No Man’s Sky turned 10 years old on August 9. The creators of the game reveal a statistic for the occasion that is not only difficult to pronounce but also shows how incredibly vast their game really is.
What does the statistic say? For the 10th anniversary of No Man’s Sky, Sean Murray, Development Chief of the game’s creators, Hello Games, released a statistic:
Despite the 10 years the game has been around, players have discovered only 1% of the entire universe of No Man’s Sky, as he reveals in a blog post:
Millions of travelers have spent hundreds of millions of hours exploring the universe and sharing their discoveries – and the universe is more alive today than ever. The “Voyager” expansions released last year saw more players than ever since launch … and yet players have explored less than 1% of the planets in “No Man’s Sky” even after all these years.

99% of all planets in No Man’s Sky remain undiscovered
What does that mean in numbers? No Man’s Sky features over 18 quintillion procedurally generated planets. To illustrate how much that really is, here is the exact 20-digit number completely written out: 18,446,744,073,079,551,161 procedurally generated planets.
It doesn’t seem so unlikely that just 1% has been traversed by players.
What’s next for the studio? Murray confirms that there is still a lot of potential in No Man’s Sky, which the studio will continue to explore, including the next update titled “COSMOS”.
Additionally, they are currently working on their next game “Light No Fire”, an adventure survival game that takes place on significantly fewer planets compared to No Man’s Sky – namely one.
What do you think of this absurdly high number of planets? Will it even be possible to discover all these planets? Let us know in the comments!
No Man’s Sky has undergone a lot of development since its release, transforming from a flop into a popular sci-fi game that continues to receive support even after 10 years.
