A nasty monster has millions of characters on its conscience in Subnautica 2, but it cannot compete with the most common cause of death.
What kind of creature is this? The developers of Subnautica 2 have published some statistics on X.com regarding the experiences that players have had since the early access release of the survival game on May 14, 2026.
According to the statistics, a total of 7,078,758 player characters have died from physical attacks by the wildlife. The deadliest creature is the Collector Leviathan, a massive, squid-like predator capable of cutting through titanium plates with its beak.
The Collector Leviathan is reported to have claimed 2,007,719 player characters—this number is expected to rise since players cannot kill the deep-sea monster. However, it still cannot compare to the most common cause of death.
Staying sufficiently hydrated is important … and so is air
What is deadlier than the Collector Leviathan? The developers’ statistics reveal that two causes of death occur even more frequently than kills by the Collector Leviathan:
- Rank 2: Dehydration
- Rank 1: Oxygen deprivation
Since the early access launch, over 6.6 million player characters have died of dehydration (water shortage) in Subnautica. However, unchallenged in first place for causes of death is oxygen deprivation: over 15.6 million characters have died because they ran out of oxygen in the deep sea.
That’s nearly 8 times as many deaths as the Collector Leviathan has collected for its statistics.
These statistics have also been shared by the developers: Contrary to the more than 6.6 million characters that have died of water shortage, more than 331 million water slugs have been collected.
A total of 42,809,226 characters have been created, 234,629 of them devoured by a giant jaw, never to escape. Additionally, only about 17.2% of all players have completed the first chapter of the game—those players were likely busy farming, as 1.35 billion titanium has been gathered. In addition, over 471 million quartz and 459 million copper have been collected.

Some creatures in Subnautica 2 are inspired by real-life counterparts. While you are stranded on an alien planet, causing various life forms to deviate from their “templates”, a certain resemblance is often unmistakable.
