The Steam hit Peak sends you into two new biomes starting now, but it will not receive any major updates afterwards.
What game is it about? PEAK, a cooperative climbing game, was released on Steam in June 2025 and grew to become a hit in the following weeks and months. The developers reported over 20 million players, and on Steam, it has over 281,000 reviews at 94% positive.
In PEAK, you must climb a mountain as lost scouts, alone or with up to 3 friends, whose layout changes every 24 hours. You can use tools like climbing hooks and ropes and help each other.
Since good friends in such games do not help each other but instead laugh loudly while watching their companions helplessly fall into the abyss, Peak was not only a success as a cooperative game but also found great appeal among streamers and their audiences on Twitch.
New Biomes, a Jetpack, and Ascent 8
What kind of update is this? Almost 14 months after the release, the developers of PEAK have now released the final major update. The cooperative hit will receive only bug fixes and maintenance afterwards. No new content will be released. The developers never considered the game to be a live-service game.
What does the update bring? The core of the new update consists of two new biomes, “Gloom” and “The Citadel,” which will alternate in rotation with “Caldera” and “The Kiln.” Additionally, there are now mysterious statues that … do something. However, the developers did not reveal what purpose these statues serve. You should find that out for yourself.
Similarly, the new difficulty level “Ascent 8” looks. The developers did not want to spoil what special challenge it offers you. Instead, they revealed that they have revised Ascent 7:
We believed that the prohibition of reviving players presented a challenge, but made this “Ascent” less enjoyable and did not reflect the spirit of the game (and is pointless in a solo run!).
Instead of “You cannot revive the dead,” it now says, “You start cursed and gain more curses with each revival,” to appropriately penalize repeated deaths without completely excluding players from the rest of the run.
Additionally, there are 10 new badges, Clown Luggage, and at least three new items: a jetpack, the so-called Warp Fungus, and a glider. There are also a number of fixes. You can read the complete patch notes on Steam.
Currently, you can purchase PEAK on Steam at a reduced price. The game is discounted by 50% until August 18, 2026, costing only 3.74 euros. This is also the lowest price at which you could officially purchase PEAK on Steam so far.
But the story behind PEAK is also interesting: The game was created because the originally planned new large project of the studio was canceled due to discrepancies with the funding partner. The team’s exhaustion then led to the idea of starting two small projects instead of beginning the next big game. You can read the entire story here: They canceled their game and worked on a fun project: It sold 1 million times on Steam
