DC continues to supply new content and gives a supporting character from last year’s film Superman his own series. The character is particularly noted for his high intelligence.
Right now, Supergirl is showing in theaters, a film that is part of the new DC Universe. In 2025, the first major film from it, Superman, was released. Now it has been announced that a new series is in development, focusing on Mr. Terrific.
The character first appeared (in this version) in 1997 in the comic Spectre #54 and was created by John Ostrander and Tom Mandrake. In Superman by James Gunn, he was portrayed by Edi Gathegi, who is set to reprise the role in the series.
This brings DC an exciting character to the forefront, who, unlike many of his colleagues, primarily excels with great intelligence – 14 doctoral degrees speak a clear language.
Mr. Terrific wants to know
What kind of character is this? Mr. Terrific’s real name is Michael Holt and he is, quite classically, a man from Earth. However, he is a highly intelligent one who stood out early on with his knowledge and ambition.
He achieved 14 doctoral degrees, won gold medals at the Olympics, and became very wealthy through his entrepreneurial activities in the technology sector. But not everything was rosy. Holt’s wife died in a car accident, leading to a change of heart.
Inspired by an earlier hero named Mr. Terrific, Holt followed this path. He became a member of the Justice Society of America and strove to uphold order and justice according to the slogan “Fair Play.”
What sets him apart as a superhero is, in addition to his immense intelligence, his talent in various martial arts and access to advanced technology. For instance, supporting him are the “T-Spheres”, flying robotic spheres, and he can render himself invisible.
In Superman from 2025, he is part of the Justice Gang along with Green Lantern and Hawkgirl. They face a giant Kaiju threatening Metropolis, and in the end, it is Mr. Terrific who takes down the enemy. Overall, he and Superman also work together in the finale.
What is known about the series? According to reports from the Hollywood Reporter, the series about Mr. Terrific is in development at DC. Allan Heinberg is set to serve as showrunner, who previously worked on the series The Sandman for Netflix and co-wrote the screenplay for Wonder Woman by Patty Jenkins.
The actor Edi Gathegi is expected to appear again as Mr. Terrific, which is part of the effort to further expand the new DC Universe.
