The Matrix by the Wachowski Sisters is one of the most famous science fiction films of all time. However, a relatively lesser-known work should not be missed by genre fans. It is currently available to stream on HBO Max.
Which film is it about? Cloud Atlas is the adaptation of the novel of the same name by David Mitchell. In German, the book is called “Der Wolkenatlas”.
Like the literary original, the film adaptation is highly ambitious, which unfortunately resulted in a flop at the box office. The story tells of six characters who live in different times and places. Therefore, the plot also covers different genres, including thriller, adventure, art film, and science fiction.
The protagonists include, among others, a lawyer who goes to sea around 1849, a journalist who confronts a murder case in the 1970s, and a clone in the future of the year 2144. The narrative, feeling like a time travel, addresses universal and philosophical themes such as freedom, love, and fate.
Cloud Atlas is a grandiose film that cleverly connects all its stories. That is precisely why it appeals to MeinMMO author Christoph.
A mosaic of small stories
What makes Cloud Atlas so good? It is a film that one must engage with. The abundance of stories, characters, and themes can be somewhat overwhelming. But I love immersing myself in such a work and sinking into it.
This is partly allowed by the runtime of nearly three hours. This is sorely needed to accommodate all the stories. Particularly fascinating is the way the six protagonists are interconnected, despite being temporally and spatially very separate.
Sometimes it is an object that appears in several epochs, sometimes a name, or a mysterious birthmark that each protagonist bears. The film plays with narrative layers and weaves them artfully together.
Cloud Atlas does not tell its six stories in strict chronological order but jumps back and forth between them. The film’s editing is deliberately nested, leaving room for personal interpretation, especially concerning the connection between two characters.
Moreover, some actors, including Tom Hanks or Halle Berry, appear in multiple time frames and play different characters each time. This raises the question of whether they are reincarnations or at least soulmates.
All in all, Cloud Atlas is a grandiose project brought to life by the Wachowski Sisters and German director Tom Tykwer. Not everything is perfect: often, the film loses its own thread and indulges in pathos – but overall, this results for me in a fascinating piece of cinema from which I cannot take my eyes away.
Anyone who has not seen Cloud Atlas can catch up on the film at home on HBO Max. At this point, the novel is also recommended, which is equally grandiose. And a rewatch or reread is worthwhile, as the universe of Cloud Atlas is full of details that are hardly grasped the first time. What is your opinion on the film?
