In Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, you can participate in large battles with huge maps, vehicles, and team spawns. However, not all players manage well with the large Ground War mode. Here are a few tips on how to become the perfect Ground War soldier and score plenty of points.
What is the Ground War mode? With Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, the series received a mode with gigantic maps where 2 teams fight against each other for positions and victory.
How do the matches go? Most Ground War matches start with 48 or 64 players and, because of this alone, they play out very differently than the usual CoD fights.
The games last a maximum of 20 minutes, and the teams try to hold more flags than the opponent during this time and to be the first to reach the point limit of 250. If one team holds all 5 flags for 30 seconds, the match is also over.
The usual play styles from the normal multiplayer cannot be easily transferred to the Ground War mode, as everything is a bit different and bigger. However, with these tips, a successful round is no longer a hurdle.
Tips for a successful Ground War on all maps
The Ground War mode is not well-received by everyone, but it can bring a lot of fun if you adjust a little to the new conditions.
The YouTuber “TheXclusiveAce” shares a few tips for aspiring Ground Warriors in an English video. Here’s an overview of his most important tips and some of our own ideas.
Choose suitable perks and equipment
What should my loadout look like? Always have a weapon with decent range and equipment against vehicles. Assault rifles and DMRs do a great job here, or snipers if you have a bit of practice with them. If not, you should check out our tips for snipers.
But also be prepared for close combat and pack a second primary weapon in your backpack so you can remain effective at very short range.
What can I do about all the vehicles? The primary equipment Thermite works exceptionally well as an anti-vehicle measure.
With the perk Shrapnel, you get a second primary equipment piece and with 2 Thermite grenades, you can already take down a tank on your own. The perk Scavenger gives you grenades back regularly.
This is the basic loadout
- Weapons
- Main weapon with high range
- Secondary weapon that works at short distances
- Perks
- Overkill
- Scavenger
- Shrapnel
- Equipment
- Thermite
If you want to forgo Overkill and perhaps take a rocket launcher instead, try the M4A1 with the Tactical build. The best attachments and setups for the M4A1 can be found here.
Proper use of vehicles
What should I consider with the vehicles? The paths in Ground War are significantly longer due to the large maps and can be greatly shortened by vehicles.
Use the vehicles wisely; they can help your team win in the right hands. It’s less about kills and more about logistics and deterrence.
- Advance
- When you are driving in a vehicle, try to take as many teammates with you as possible.
- Often, the team that brings fallen soldiers back to important spots on the map the fastest wins.
- Deterrence
- Many players avoid enemy vehicles and seek a different way instead of aggressively approaching the armored vehicle.
- Use this to your advantage and block important spots where enemies frequently pass to cut off or delay supplies.
Consider the squad spawn
How does the squad spawn work? In the Ground War mode, you can spawn at your teammates. However, one of your teammates must be alive, and they must not be under fire or firing bullets themselves.
Why is the squad spawn so important? With this feature, you can return to action immediately if you were taken out during defense or advance.
If you are in a 4-man squad, make sure someone is always alive. With a bit of coordination, your game won’t lose momentum, and you can continue working towards your objective.
Even solo, you help your squad and team when you try to hold back a bit when all your other teammates have suddenly fallen.
If you want to improve your collaboration with your team, play in a four-person group in the 2vs2 mode – With these tips and tactics, you can deliver exciting matches.
Snipers live dangerously – on all maps
The large maps are excellent for players who prefer a bit more range. However, this is also known to other soldiers, and everyone has their way of dealing with snipers.
Why is sniping so dangerous? While some wounded players leave the exposed areas and look for another path, there are also players who deliberately hunt snipers. Be wary of these.
What can I do about it? Keep moving and aim as little as possible through the scope.
Try to stay close to your squad or team and support advances or defenses from the second row. Help your team by taking out enemy snipers or picking off distant foes.
Try to aim through your scope as little as possible. The reflection can be seen across the entire map and often draws attention to your location.
You can also find a spot far outside the action and influence the game from a distance. Here, an adjusted bullet speed can help you.
Take care of map control
What does map control mean? Your team has map control as soon as you hold more flags than the opponent.
This allows you to transfer the play style of the “small” mode Domination to the large Ground War. It suffices if your team holds the majority of the flags and then defends them, rather than continuing to push for the remaining enemy flags.
How can I leverage map control? The current status of the flags gives you the next priority. If the opponent holds more flags, you should maybe try to take one of the rear points with your squad to open another front for the opponent.
If your team holds the most points, consider which flag might come under pressure next and shift your squad in that direction.
Always keep an eye on the current game status over the map and react accordingly. Depending on the situation, you should go on the offense or defense.
Anticipate the direction of the enemy
How do I know from which direction the enemies are coming? Orient yourself on the map to see approximately where the next enemy spawn point is and react to it.
Most players choose the spawn that brings them back to action the fastest. If no squad spawn is available, then there’s only the flag left that is closest to the first enemy flag.
With the right positioning, you can flank the enemy supply routes or find a suitable spot in the zone that is under pressure from the enemies.
You just need to take down the approaching enemies effectively. Strong attachments that improve aiming can help with this.
Remember the spots on the maps
How does this help me? With knowledge of the key spots near the zones, you can move safely over the maps and avoid unwanted surprises.
Map knowledge is important in all modes of Call of Duty, and in Ground War, you should also remember specific spots. You don’t need to memorize the entire map. But if you were taken out by a sniper at point C a few times, check the kill cam and remember the spot. For counterattacks or your own use.
How should I proceed? If the maps are new to you, always take in the enemy’s kill cam. This will not only give you your perspective of the map but also allow you to have another view of the events.
To get to know the spots better, focus on individual buildings and check all floors, look out the windows, orient yourself based on already known points. Use a suppressor so you are not easily spotted.
At the latest when you accidentally discover a sniper spot from which you have been defeated several times, you can assess the tactical value of the building and at least know the basic layout.
Take over buildings and hold the position
Why are buildings so important? In buildings, you are mostly safe from snipers and vehicles, and you can hold an important position against the advance of the enemies.
The buildings near the flags are particularly important. They provide good cover for an advance on the objective and are often full of attackers and defenders. Learn the layout of a well-frequented house and remove unwanted visitors. In close combat, the finishing moves can be really helpful.
While you play the bouncer, you don’t have to fear enemy tanks or snipers. However, the enemies are also protected from these attacks, and with a few kills in a flag house, the opponents’ advance can quickly stall.
Ground War as a balance to normal Multiplayer
Why should you play Ground War? The new, large mode of Modern Warfare may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but it brings a lot of XP and, with a bit of practice, also fun. In a 4-person team, you can have a significant influence on the game and help your team to victory with the right strategies.
But you can also have a good time in Ground War even solo. The vast battlefield slows down the pace of the game a bit, if you want it to, and brings a whole new feel to gameplay.
Are you playing the Ground War mode or is it just not your thing? Do you have some valuable hints?
