With a new trailer, Marvel has finally confirmed the release of Season 2 of the best Marvel series and already shows the powerful villain who is even on the level of Thanos.
Which series is it about? In 2024, Disney, who acquired 20th Century Fox and the X-Men rights in 2019, produced a revival of the animated X-Men series from the 1990s. With X-Men ’97, the well-known Marvel group returned in 2024.
The series is set in the same universe as the old one (which can also be watched on Disney Plus), but story-wise it also serves as a good starting point for newcomers who have only heard about mutants and X-Men.
Now, a first trailer has finally been released, confirming July 1, 2026, as the release date for Season 2 on Disney+. You can watch the trailer here:
A dangerous villain stands against the X-Men
What is Season 2 about? Following the tragic events of Season 1, the X-Men find no peace. As already hinted in Season 1, the mutants must face the villain Apocalypse in the new season, the first mutant of all time.
Without wanting to reveal too much: Apocalypse is one of the most powerful villains in the Marvel universe. He is immortal, possesses superhuman strength, speed, and reflexes, and has other rather unfair abilities that have made life difficult for the X-Men since 1986.
Additionally, the trailer already shows quite a bit of action and many characters that are known and loved in the X-Men cosmos. In line with Season 1, it can also be expected that the development of characters such as Rogue, Cyclops, and Magneto will continue.
Sorry Avengers: The X-Men are the best Marvel team
What does MeinMMO editor and X-Men fan Nikolas Hernes think of the trailer? The trailer grabs me with the music alone. For me, Season 1 of X-Men ’97 is the best Marvel series available on Disney+. Even though it’s a cartoon, the series has the action of a superhero team, but also an emotional and human depth that has always characterized the X-Men.
That’s why the Avengers have never managed to replace the X-Men in my heart. And the trailer for the new season already shows many cool concepts: Besides Apocalypse, it seems there will also be time travel, which can be a lot of fun.
Also important to me is the theme: Mutants and Society
, which was already addressed in Season 1 and remains a vital element of the X-Men comics to this day, differentiating them from all the other superhero teams.
This raises my anticipation more than for Avengers: Doomsday, as that very emotional and societal component is missing.
