In the futuristic Night City, life should be a dream – but it is not. The grim future is full of neon lights but hardly any joy. This is also true for young David Martinez, who wants to fulfill his mother’s wish and get a good job at the mega-corporation Arasaka.
During an accident, he comes into contact with a new piece of cyberware, the Sandevistan – a prosthetic that grants him superhuman speed but gradually tears away at his humanity.
After being expelled from university for using it, David attracts the attention of the mysterious Lucy and her gang, a group of “Edgerunners” – cyborgs who break the law and commit burglaries, industrial espionage, and other crimes for clients. David tries to survive in this corrupt system and soon finds himself in the crosshairs of the company he originally wanted to work for.
How does evil win in Cyberpunk Edgerunners? The mega-corporation Arasaka has a gigantic influence in Night City, and this is not diminished by the events of the series. Although David does everything to save his beloved Lucy, he pays with his life for it. He is even tempted to use a prototype to fight against his executioner, Adam Smasher, sent by Arasaka – and he fails.
The story ends with David’s death while Arasaka remains fundamentally unscathed and continues to hold control. Worse still: They simply used David as a guinea pig to advance their research and obtain new data. David’s life was not a hero’s story, as Night City remains just as merciless after his death as it was before.
