In the early 2000s, a small group of people gained access to psychokinetic abilities. Almost a millennium later, young Saki lives with her friends in the small village of Kamisu and goes to school there to master her special powers. But as idyllic as it may seem – it is not. Classmates frequently disappear from the village and early rumors arise that they may be deliberately “sorted out”.
When the teenagers then encounter the mysterious “Face Ratties” who serve humans as subjects, they gradually uncover a dark secret whose full extent they will only comprehend many years later.

How does evil prevail in Shinsekai Yori? In Shinsekai Yori, there are some dark revelations at the end that have been hinted at throughout the series. The “Face Ratties” were originally humans, but were altered in their DNA by the psychically gifted so that they could be killed without moral concerns.
After a rebellion by these Face Ratties, which is bloody and quite justified, the old order of the psychic people is maintained. A system that exploits dark elements like eugenics, brainwashing, and even the killing of children to uphold the rule of the “Chosen Ones”.
Shinsekai Yori is an incredibly dark story whose full cruelty is only truly understood in the final episodes.
