Epitome
Setting: Fantasy / MMORPG | Developer: Epitome P.S.A. | Platform: PC | Status: In Development, Pre-Alpha | Campaign Year: 2026 | Funds via Kickstarter: 559,490 Euro Euro | Backers: 20,194
The MMORPG by Epitome P.S.A. takes you into the namesake system where your goal is to become an Archon. One of the game’s special features is that NPCs are designed to act like dynamic individuals thanks to advanced AI. They respond to your choices and shape the story.
Furthermore, the developers promise revolutionary Nextgen servers where more than 33,000 players can roam around in a version of the game world simultaneously. This should lead to bustling cities and epic battles.
Last but not least, Epitome is set to offer Nextgen graphics, a fair payment model, as well as a system with three classes (Warrior, Ninja, Shaman) and two advanced classes (Necromancer, Elementalist). Here you can see gameplay from the pre-alpha:
At times, there was talk on Steam that Epitome was to be released in the first quarter of 2025. A look at the calendar and the campaign on Kickstarter shows that this plan was obviously much too ambitious.
Despite this circumstance and the open communication that one wants to strongly focus on Artificial Intelligence, the MMORPG is celebrating great success on the crowdfunding platform. The targeted 85,897 Euros were already in the pot after a very short time. In the end, one collected a multiple of the hoped-for amount.
All supporters are expected to gain access to the pre-alpha version of the game in March 2026. Of the 9 planned maps, only one will be playable at that time. Thus, the developers still have a long way to go.
Sad Final Report for Kickstarter MMORPGs
26 Kickstarter MMOs since 2012 and the current tally is as sad as it is sobering:
- Only 2 games have been released and are currently playable – only Project: Gorgon enjoys a positive reputation.
- 3 more games are playable in Early Access on Steam, plus Star Citizen, which one has been able to play as a supporter for years. While it is still possible to access the servers of Ashes of Creation, the MMORPG can no longer be purchased on Steam.
- 14 games are now offline, having been prematurely canceled or are so far from completion that there is little hope left.
- Through these 14 games, over 7.5 million dollars were burned alone on Kickstarter. Additional revenues come from other crowdfunding projects or supporter packages.
- Almost all the games on this list undergo difficult and very long developments, often with many setbacks.
Star Citizen continues to promise big dreams and might ultimately deliver. However, this project has also faced criticism in the past, such as for the long development time, the monetization through the sale of spaceships, or the switch to a project that has long ceased to have anything to do with the original Kickstarter campaign.
So far, only Stars Reach and Loftia can really make a positive impact. The campaigns for Epitome and Asteria are still too fresh to evaluate in any way.
All other games have a history of at least difficult developments, which have noticeably affected the quality of the respective MMOs. Only one completed Kickstarter MMO has been able to truly impress so far, which aims more for an old-school niche (Project: Gorgon). Many do not even make it over the finish line.
Therefore, our recommendation: Spend your money wisely and preferably not on complex MMOs that currently only exist as concepts or are still years away from release. The likelihood is high that you will never receive anything playable in return that ultimately provides enjoyment.
