Many players have had the painful experience of their favorite MMORPG being shut down. However, two players from Japan do not want to let that happen and have decided to save their title.
Which game is it about? Gensokishi Online is an MMORPG that primarily targeted the Asian market. Thus, there are two terms, NFT and Metaverse, that our readers on MeinMMO do not really like to hear.
But even if the Play2Earn MMORPG may not be the dream of Western players, the game has built a fan base over the years. Even before players could make money with the MMORPG, the game focused on medieval fantasy with four different classes and cute characters since 2012.
As one of the first mobile MMORPGs, it attracted over 8 million players worldwide according to the developers, and two of them are now very important.
There is no official trailer, but you can get an impression of the game on YouTube:
Players save MMORPG
What is the status of the MMORPG? Gensokishi Online was originally supposed to close on April 30, 2026, but two players did not accept that. The gamers of the guild “Hanabite” founded the Hanabite company from their guild with the intention of saving the game from being shut down.
The two were so serious that they called the developers of MetaP to negotiations, which were indeed successful. While it is unclear under what conditions the developers were willing to hand over their MMORPG to the new management, Gensokishi Online will not die in April 2026.
On the official website, the developers explain that they will transfer the game to the fan company. Therefore, players can look forward to the game’s continuation.
What will happen to the MMORPG? The announcement on genso.game laid out specific milestones for the restart of the game: A formal contract is to be signed by the end of April; the development of a new plan is set to begin in mid-May and should be completed between August and September.
It was also pointed out in the official announcement that this timeline may be adjusted depending on the actual progress. The talks seem to focus on plans to reduce operating costs and increase profitability.
Thus, the MMORPG should be able to sustain itself and, with the help of the new owners, get back on its feet.
It is extremely rare for an MMORPG to be saved by its own fans. Most MMORPGs simply go offline when it is no longer profitable for their operators – especially when it is just a port from Asia.
