The “You’re not paying for my sub” Rebel
This player likes to see themselves as a free spirit, as established rules and game systems are just guidelines anyway, right? This leads to mechanics that have been part of the game since time immemorial, important tooltips, or well-meaning advice being ignored or dismissed with a diva-like, iconic “You’re not paying for my sub.” After all, everyone pays their own sub, so I can play the game however I see fit, right?
Combos and optimized rotations? No one needs that when you can simply use abilities that look cool; it works just fine. Maybe don’t enter a level 50 dungeon with gear that is clearly below the level? Why spend money on new ones when these still work?
These players often fail to realize that they frequently cause content to take unnecessarily much longer and ruin the enjoyment for their teammates. Yet other players are also paying their own subscriptions and want to have fun in the game.
The Limit Break Fat Finger
That feeling when the long-awaited tone rings out in intense fights: The Limit Break bar is filled to level 3 and is just waiting to be unleashed. The boss only has a few percent health left, and the stage is clear for the melee fighter to spectacularly take down the enemy with a lot of damage.
But suddenly the screen is filled with blinding light, everyone is blinded, and the Red Mage has once again lost control of his fingers – the animation just looks so fancy. Or maybe it’s the healer who accidentally triggers the healer LB3 in a full group, or the tank who slips on the big red limit break button during the trash pull: The fat finger always causes an embarrassed silence in the chat, usually followed by a hastily typed “Sorry, wrong button!”
The Cutscene Saboteur
Many of us play Final Fantasy XIV primarily for the epic story and breathtaking cutscenes. So when the little film reel icon appears over a new player’s head, the unwritten law of the community states: we wait.
However, the cutscene saboteur has absolutely no time for that. For him, the story is just annoying background noise, and every second waiting time is too much. While the majority patiently waits for their teammates, this player jumps headfirst into the fray. Whether the few seconds gained are worth the sad faces of teammates who are teleported into an ongoing fight remains to be seen.
