MeinMMO editor Karsten Scholz is really looking forward to WoW: Forever. The Classic version of World of Warcraft remains a uniquely special MMO experience that you can’t find anywhere else today.
Blizzard has finally announced WoW: Forever, WoW Classic Plus, and I am very excited for the launch in November 2026. The reason, or rather the two reasons, are the two best gaming experiences of my life:
- Vanilla WoW ignited my passion for the MMORPG genre in 2005 and provided me with the best gaming phase of my life as part of the guild Godmode – which should last until the fall of heroic Lich King.
- WoW Classic was able to replicate this feat in 2019: I found a special community again to tackle the old WoW content together and settle all the open accounts that had been pending for 13 or 14 years (like defeating Kel’Thuzad in Naxxramas).
I just enjoy the slowed-down leveling phase and the constant interaction in quests or when it comes to dungeons and later raids. And that you still have to organize old-school via chat or Discord. Such an MMO experience is simply not offered by modern representatives of the genre.
I found the subsequent Classic seasons exciting, but they had a taint of “all earned progress will be gone in the foreseeable future”. Like many others, I simply wished for more content based on the Classic foundation, as an alternative timeline to the path that WoW took with the “The Burning Crusade” expansion starting in 2007.
The Fulfillment of a Dream
WoW: Forever offers this alternative experience. It goes to level 60 in new zones to explore quests, dungeons, and raids that have never been played before. Occasionally, familiar features from the future of WoW land in the new, old WoW. The Horde Paladins, for example, and the Alliance Shamans. I particularly like that.
They could have left the transmogrification out in my opinion, but I know that the cosmetic customization of characters is important for many MMO fans. And I can apparently deactivate it at the push of a button so that all warriors shine in exactly the classic clown costumes we know from the Vanilla era.
What excites me the most: This is going to be an MMO experience that fully focuses on interaction and competition. Dungeons and raids are the focus of the PvE endgame. You have to organize yourself for these by talking to other players and collaborating as a guild to tackle the content together. WoW: Forever is supposed to embrace this old-school MMO experience despite various innovations, and that’s just right!
Does Blizzard believe in the success of WoW: Forever?
I just hope that Blizzard has learned from the initial launch of WoW Classic. WoW: Forever absolutely needs closed language servers for the important countries. And from the start, they need enough language servers so that the community can spread out evenly as soon as possible.
Before the launch of WoW Classic, Blizzard did not believe in the success of the classic version and therefore acted far too cautiously. They only provided language servers after a huge backlash, but there were far too few of them. RP servers were almost nonexistent.
Numerous players on various servers suffered for months (especially on PvP servers). This must not happen again this time! I was lucky to be on one of the few German PvE servers with a healthy population (and hardly any login waiting times).
On October 27, we will know more. A pre-registration phase is supposed to start then, and we will see what kind of and how many servers Blizzard will provide for WoW: Forever. If they make the right decision for that day, I’m sure that one of the best gaming experiences of my life awaits me again in Azeroth.
