In WoW Forever, you must choose a realm type, as you cannot play with everyone else. The choice has significant consequences.
Why is choosing a server in WoW Forever special?
Before you start with World of Warcraft Forever, you must make a choice that will determine your entire subsequent adventure: the type of game mode, also known as “realm type.” WoW Forever comes with four different game modes that offer entirely different experiences and also determine which players you will encounter.
How does the server choice work in WoW Forever?
In WoW Forever, you no longer need to choose a fixed realm or server, as in other versions of the game. Instead, you only select the general type of realm. Internally, there is a kind of “mega-server” where all players of the chosen realm type are housed.
WoW Forever: The 5 Game Modes
There are a total of five different game modes with their own rules available, of which four are available at launch:
Normal
The typical PvE experience of World of Warcraft. Characters from the opposing faction are hostile, but PvP is only possible if you actively consent. If you are primarily looking for a PvE experience, this is the best option.
PvP
In contested areas, PvP is permanently enabled. You can be attacked by characters from the opposing faction at almost any time. If you seek excitement while leveling and PvP battles in the open world, you should choose this mode.
Roleplay
Roleplay is typically meant for a smaller group. If you want to act out your character, you are in the right place with the roleplay realm type. Note that special rules for naming and behavior in chat apply here to enhance immersion.
Roleplay PvP
The rules combine the conditions for roleplay and PvP.
Hardcore
Your character has only a single life. If you die, the journey is over. If your character is defeated, you can transfer them to one of the other realms and continue playing there. This mode is not available at launch and will be released later.
WoW Forever: Realm Types – Can you switch?
No, this is not possible. The various realm types each form their own ecosystem. So if you choose “Normal,” you will never encounter characters from the “PvP” or “Roleplay” settings in the open world. Your choice is therefore binding. If you want to switch, you must create a new character with a different realm type selection.
The only exception here are PvP battlegrounds. If you register for these, you may also encounter characters from other realm types.
WoW Forever: German Realms – Are there any?
Although there are no separate realms for different languages (so no “German realms”), you will predominantly encounter German-speaking players if you wish. In the options, you can set your preferred language.
A “mega-server” for all of Europe means that there are always multiple instances of the world (also known as “shards” or “layers”). They are primarily divided by languages, so you will primarily enter a world with other players who share the same language preference. The choice of language can still be changed later.
What does this mean for names? Names must be in World of Warcraft Forever and across all realm types. For this reason, both first and last names exist in Forever to allow for as many combinations as possible. You can be sure that if you name yourself “Gerlinde Sonnenglanz,” you will not encounter anyone else with that name. This combination of first and last name then belongs exclusively to you.
Which realm type will you choose at the start of WoW Forever? Will you try a cozy PvE experience, or are you more inclined toward PvP? Or are you one of the role-players excited to live out your character in the world of Forever? When choosing your name, make sure you don’t make any nonsense – as a wrong name can quickly lead to the loss of your account.
