In WoW Forever, you must choose a realm type, as you cannot play with everyone else. This choice has significant consequences.
Before you start with World of Warcraft Forever, you must make a selection that will determine your entire subsequent adventure: the type of game mode, also known as “realm type.” Because WoW Forever comes with four different game modes that offer a completely different experience and also determine which players you encounter.
How does it work with the servers in WoW Forever? In WoW Forever, you no longer have to choose a fixed realm or server as in other versions of the game. Instead, you only choose the general type of the realm. Internally, there is a kind of “mega-server” where all players of the selected realm type reside.
The 5 game modes of WoW Forever
In total, there are four different game modes available, with four being available at launch:
- Normal: The typical PvE experience of World of Warcraft. Characters of the opposing faction are hostile, but PvP is only possible if you actively agree. If you are primarily looking for a PvE experience, this is the best place for you.
- PvP: In contested areas, PvP is permanently activated. You can be attacked by characters of the opposing faction at almost any time. If you are looking for the thrill of leveling and PvP battles in the open world, you should choose this mode.
- Roleplay: Roleplay is typically intended for a smaller group. If you want to portray your character dramatically, the roleplay realm type is the right choice for you. Note that special rules apply here for naming and chat behavior to enhance immersion.
- Role-playing PvP: The rules combine the framework for role-playing and PvP.
- Hardcore: Your character has only a single life. If you die, the journey is over. If your character is defeated, you can transfer them to one of the other realms and continue playing there. This mode is not available at launch and will be added later.
Realm types in WoW Forever – Can you switch?
No, that is not possible. The different realm types are each their own ecosystem. So if you choose “Normal,” you will never encounter characters from the “PvP” or “Roleplay” settings in the open world. Your choice is therefore binding. If you want to switch, you must create a new character with a different realm type selection.
The only exception here is PvP battlegrounds. If you sign up for these, you can also encounter characters from other realm types.
Are there German realms in WoW Forever?
Although there are no dedicated realms with different languages (so no “German realms”), you will predominantly encounter German-speaking players if you wish. In the options, you can set your preferred language.
A “mega-server” for all of Europe also means that there are always multiple instances of the world (also known as “shards” or “layers”). These are primarily divided by languages, so if you prefer German, you will primarily enter a world with other players who share the same language preference. The choice of language can still be changed later.
What does this mean for names? Names must be unique in World of Warcraft Forever across all realm types. For this reason, there are both first and last names in Forever to allow for as many combinations as possible. But you can be sure, if you call yourself “Gerlinde Sonnenglanz,” you will not encounter anyone else with that name. This combination of first and last names will then belong exclusively to you.
