WoW Dragonflight: Caller Guide – How to play the new class Evoker with builds for DPS & Healer

In WoW Dragonflight comes the Evokers, a new class and a new race. The two are inseparably linked: Every Dracthyr is an Evoker and every Evoker is a Dracthyr. In our guide, we explain what makes the class special and how to play the two specializations Devastation and Preservation ideally.

What defines Evokers? For the first time in 6 years, World of Warcraft is getting a new class. The Evokers of the Dracthyr wear chain mail and can deal damage with spells at range as well as heal. However, they are limited to a range of 30 meters, a big difference compared to classes like Priest, Druid, or Shaman.

You start as a Dracthyr on a special island and begin at level 58. In the starting area, you can roughly reach level 60 and then start the content. Since Dracthyr are like the descendants of the great dragonflights, their abilities are divided into specific colors:

  • Red: Damage spells that mostly deal damage over time (“DoTs”) and area damage (“AoE”)
  • Blue: Damage spells that are usually strongest against 1-3 targets (“Cleave”)
  • Bronze: Healing spells that primarily aim to prevent damage
  • Green: Direct healing spells and healing over time (“HoTs”)
  • Black: Abilities with mixed or defensive traits

Looking for a name for your Evoker? Here you can find the perfect dragon name.

In our guide, we explain what makes the class and race unique, which builds and talents you should use, and how Evokers play in combat. Keep in mind: With the new talent system of Dragonflight, you have the chance to test dozens of different builds or tweak nuances to find your playstyle.

Our guide is primarily a guideline and a helpful resource to get as an Evoker and mainly serves to learn the class. In our special, you will also find all the info on the Evokers of the Dracthyr.

You can find this guide along with many other useful information in the new GameStar special issue of Dragonflight, which MeinMMO contributed to:

An Overview of the Dracthyr Racial Abilities

Here are the abilities of the Dracthyr:

  • Wing Buffet – Pushes enemies away from you (1.5 minutes cooldown)
  • Glide – Reduces falling speed, similar to the Gliding of Demon Hunters
  • Tail Sweep – Launches enemies within 8 meters into the air (1.5 minutes cooldown)
  • Sail – Catapults you into the air and allows you to fly there (3 minutes cooldown)
  • Known Sky – Reduces the cooldown of Sail by 1 minute on continents you have fully explored
  • Awaken – Increases mastery by 2.5%
  • Sharp Eye – Increases perception by 2% (you are more likely to find rare resources while gathering)

Additionally, like Worgen, you can switch between a more humanoid and a more dragon-like form through Visage.

What makes Dracthyr special? Sailing is the biggest feature of the Dracthyr. Like the dragon riding in Dragonflight, you can glide through the air and move using various abilities, ascend, or speed up.

However, you do not have momentum like your riding dragons, but rather a limited number of charges on your abilities. The cooldown of Sail only resets when you land again.

An Overview of the Evoker Abilities

What can Evokers do? As an Evoker, you wear chain armor and therefore share your loot primarily with Shamans, partly with Hunters and other spellcasting classes. You can wield axes, daggers, fist weapons, maces, staves, and swords.

You also inherently have 4 class abilities that make you particularly useful in a group:

  • Wrath of the Aspects: Increases the haste of all group and raid members by 30% for 40 seconds (Bloodlust/Heroism)
  • Blessing of the Bronze: Reduces the cooldown of important movement abilities of group and raid members by 15% for 1 hour
  • Hover: Allows casting most spells while moving for 10 seconds and increases movement speed by 30%
  • Deep Breath: Flies a great distance and deals damage to enemies along the way. You free yourself from all effects that prevent your movement and become immune to such effects as well as loss of control effects during the flight.

Additionally, you have access to “empowered” spells. These spells have a different effect depending on how long you cast them – such as hitting more targets or dealing more damage. One of the biggest challenges for new Evokers is to learn when to empower which spell and how long to do so, as well as when to use Hover.

Empowered spells cannot be cast while moving.

Which talents should I choose? The talent trees for all classes in Dragonflight are divided into a class and a specialization tree. The class tree usually contains talents that benefit every specialization as well as specific abilities for movement or support of the group (“Utility”).

Depending on whether you play the Dracthyr as DPS (Devastation) or healer (Preservation), other talents will be useful for you. In the respective guides for the specializations below, you will find selected talents that support your build. However, we will briefly explain some of the most important talents here:

  • Obsidian Scales: Reduces your damage taken by 30% for 12 seconds (1.5 minutes cooldown). This is one of your most important defensive cooldowns.
  • Renewing Flames: For 8 seconds, you will be healed for 100% of the damage taken over the past 8 seconds (1.5 minutes cooldown). This is your second defensive cooldown.
  • Interrupt: Interrupts the casting of enemy spells
  • Time Pressure: The next empowered spell is cast at maximum level
  • Tyrannical Roar: Enemies in a cone in front of you suffer 50% increased loss of control effects for 10 seconds
  • Nullify: Deals a large amount of damage to absorption shields
  • Zephyr: You and 4 nearby allies within 20 meters take 20% less damage from area attacks for the next 8 seconds and move 30% faster
  • Time Spiral: You and allies can use a major movement ability once in the next 10 seconds, even if it’s currently not available
