World of Warcraft and also the Classic version of the game are currently down. Those who want to play are out of luck and have to wait.
Update 3:20 PM: Players now seem to be able to log in again and the problem has likely been resolved. Nothing stands in the way of the weekend in Azeroth!
Original announcement: Those who want to log in to World of Warcraft or World of Warcraft Classic are most likely out of luck. Thousands of players are reporting that they either lost connection to the game or cannot log in at all. Most are getting stuck at the login screen.
What happened? Since around 2:00 PM today (October 18, 2019), many players can no longer log in to World of Warcraft and World of Warcraft Classic. Logging in takes many seconds and ends with an error message stating that the connection was interrupted. Therefore, it is currently not possible for most players to play either of the two WoW versions.
Most are receiving the error message “WOW51900102” upon disconnection.
Blizzard is working on the problem: On Twitter, Blizzard has already announced that they are aware of the problem and are referring to it as “Technical Difficulties.” They are diligently working on a solution and will inform players as soon as the problems are resolved. However, no timeframe has been given yet.
Other games are not affected: The issues appear to be occurring only with World of Warcraft and WoW Classic. Other Blizzard games, such as Hearthstone, Overwatch or Heroes of the Storm are not reporting any issues. They can still be played without problems.
The forum is overflowing: Currently, players are venting their frustration in the official forum and leaving no good remark on the developers and operators of World of Warcraft. They wanted to start the weekend with a few hours of relaxed gaming, which is now down the drain. Accordingly, dissatisfaction is running high. Whether Blizzard is truly to blame here is still not even clear.
Players are already demanding compensation in the form of additional playtime. Whether that will happen, of course, is another question, as Blizzard has actually not done that for years.
