Games Workshop has now announced the new format that will be introduced in Warhammer stores to replace the “Miniature of the Month”. And if they do it right, MeinMMO editor Caro is really looking forward to it.
What is this new format? It’s a modified version of the “Miniature of the Month,” which made its final appearance in September 2026. Starting this month—specifically on October 10, 2026—the miniature will make way for eight other candidates.
Warhammer fans and anyone interested can then choose one of these 8 different miniatures from Warhammer 40,000 and Age of Sigmar, and then assemble and/or paint it with the help of a staff member. The options mentioned so far include:
- a Necron Warrior
- a Cadian Shock Trooper
- an Adepta Sororitas Battle Sister
- a Chaos Space Marine Legionary
- a Chaos Warrior
- a Deathrattle Skeleton
- an Orruk Gutripper
- a Cities of Sigmar Steelhelm

The biggest news besides the selection: The miniatures are no longer limited editions, so they usually won’t be sold out on the first or, at the latest, the second day after they hit stores. Games Workshop also clarifies this in their announcement: “These eight miniatures will be restocked in stores, so you don’t need to worry about missing out on day one.”
The new format sounds like an appropriate compensation, at least on paper
When it was first announced that Games Workshop would no longer be continuing the “Miniature of the Month” series, I was initially very disappointed. It was what first encouraged me to look beyond my usual go-to tabletop store and venture into a Warhammer store—something I’ll admit I’d been a bit intimidated by: I thought Warhammer fans were total gatekeepers—now that I’d been to the store, I was ashamed of my prejudices.
In that same community post, I was promised that a different format would take its place… and that was supposed to make up for my disappointment!
Following the new announcement, I’m actually cautiously optimistic – even a little excited – to take advantage of the offer. I like the approach that lets me choose a miniature (since not all of the previous “Miniatures of the Month” were to my taste).
I also really like that you don’t have to block off the day in your calendar just to get your hands on the limited-edition mini.
I do hope, though, that the minis are the new “8 Miniatures of the Month” or the “8 Miniatures of the Quarter” (?), and not, perhaps, the “8 Miniatures of the Year.”
New ways to learn with others, even experts
I’m pleased with the approach that, by spreading the event out over the entire month instead of holding it on a single Saturday, more time can be made available for individual painting enthusiasts. Games Workshop writes in its post on this topic:
This is a great opportunity for you to try an activity with our store staff using these miniatures.
[…]
You can use the opportunity to try out a new colour scheme, or even take the first step on that army that you’ve been thinking about. You can also call on the expertise of the store staff to get help with a new painting technique – the Chaos Warrior could help you perfect painting fur, while the Deathrattle Skeleton could let you try out weathered metal or decaying cloth. Just drop in and speak to a friendly staff member to find out how you can join in.

When it comes to techniques, I’ve never discussed them with other fans, let alone veterans. I’ve simply picked up my “skills” (note the humble quotation marks, thank you) through YouTube tutorials and my own trial and error.
Personally, I’m very curious to see how I can improve with direct feedback if I actually set up camp for a painting session at the store.
What do you think of the new miniature format in Warhammer stores? Do you think this offer is a worthy replacement? Or would you rather have the old “Miniature of the Month” back?
Ultimately, another miniature was able to lure me into the store that I simply found too cool to pass up. And yes, even though it’s not a Tyranid: Because of a model for 50 euros, I cheated on my beloved Tyranids from Warhammer 40,000
