In Valheim, you can use portals to ease your life in the deadly lands. How to unlock, build, and connect them is what we will show you here in our guide.
What do portals do for me? Valheim has a gigantic map. First, you need to traverse it on foot, and when you cover long distances, the return journey can take forever. That’s why the developers decided to implement portals into the game. With them, you can quickly cross large distances in seconds. However, to use them, you must first unlock them, as they are not immediately available.
Portals in Valheim – All Important Information
How do I unlock the portal? To unlock portals, you need to have picked up a sample of the material “Fine Wood” for the first time. Automatically, the blueprint for the wooden portal will be unlocked.
How do I build the wooden portal? To build the wooden portal, you need not only Fine Wood but also other materials that you combine at a workbench. These include:
- 10 Graydwarf Eyes
- Location: You can find them in the Meadows in the first biome of your journey when you defeat Graydwarfs. Some of them drop their eyes.
- 20 Fine Wood
- Location: Chop down trees such as birches with a bronze axe.
- 2 Surtling Cores
- Location: You can quickly obtain the cores by exploring burial chambers in the Dark Forest.
Does the wooden portal have a catch? Yes, you cannot transport important goods like ores with it. This portal serves only as “person transport”.
Can I connect portals? Yes, you can, otherwise, the system wouldn’t work. If you have built two portals of the same type, you can name them. So give the portals you want to connect the same name, as only then can they work together and transport you.
Are there other types of portals? Yes, another type exists, the stone portal. This not only looks more rustic but also allows you to transport important materials like ores or metals effortlessly.
How do I unlock the stone portal? To unlock the new portal, you should visit the Ashlands and loot and explore the area.
What do I need for the stone portal? To build the stone portal, you need the stonecutter as a new workstation and additional materials. These include:
- 10 Graydwarf Eyes
- Location: You can find them in the Meadows in the first biome of your journey when you defeat Graydwarfs. Some of them drop their eyes.
- 20 Stones
- Location: You can find them everywhere on the ground in the Ashlands.
- 2 Molten Cores
- Location: You can find molten cores in the Ashlands in hells, dungeons, and chests.
That was all the important information you should know about Valheim’s portals. Even though teleporters seem useful, some players actually refuse to use them.
