In Valheim you can use portals that are meant to make your life in the deadly lands easier. How to unlock, build, and connect them is shown here in our guide.
What do portals bring me? Valheim has a gigantic map. First, you have to traverse it on foot, and if you cover large distances, the return trip can take forever. That’s why the developers decided to implement portals into the game.
With them, you can quickly cross large distances in seconds. However, to use them, you first have to unlock them, as they are not available right away.
Portals in Valheim – What you need to know
How do I unlock the portal? To unlock portals, you need to collect an example of the material “Fine Wood” for the first time. This will automatically unlock the blueprint for the wood portal.
How do I build the wood portal? To build the wood portal, you need Fine Wood along with other materials that you combine at a workbench. These include:
- 10 Graydwarf Eyes
- Location: You can find them in the meadows in the first biome of your journey when you defeat Graydwarfs. Some of them drop their eyes.
- 20 Fine Wood
- Location: You can obtain this by chopping down trees like birches with a bronze axe.
- 2 Surtling Cores
- Location: You can obtain the cores most quickly by exploring tombs in the Black Forest.
Does the wood portal have a catch? Yes, you cannot transport important goods like ores with it. These portals are only for “person transportation”.
Can I connect portals? Yes, you can, otherwise the system wouldn’t work. If you have built two portals of the same type, you can name them. So give the portals you want to connect the same name, as only then can they work together and transport you.
Are there other types of portals? Yes, there is another type, the stone portal. Not only does it look more rustic, but it also allows you to transport important materials like ores or metals effortlessly.
How do I unlock the stone portal? To unlock the new portal, you should visit the Ashlands and loot and explore the area.
What do I need for the stone portal? To build the stone portal, you need the stonecutter as a new workshop and additional materials. These include:
- 10 Graydwarf Eyes
- Location: You can find them in the meadows in the first biome of your journey when you defeat Graydwarfs. Some of them drop their eyes.
- 20 Stone
- Location: You can find them everywhere on the ground in the Ashlands.
- 2 Molten Cores
- Location: You can find molten cores in the Ashlands in caves, dungeons, and chests.
Those were all the important things you should know about Valheim’s portals. Even though teleporters may seem useful, some players actually refuse to use them.
