Valheim has a release date. Yes, the game has been playable since 2021 and still regularly has tens of thousands of players, but it hasn’t been “finished” until now. That will change in September.
At the PC Gaming Show, Valheim announced: Version 1.0 will be released on September 9, 2026, and not only for Steam, but also on PS5. The developers have been working on the release since the survival game launched in Early Access on Steam in 2021. A lot has happened since then:
- two new biomes have been added, the Mistlands and the Ashlands, along with new dungeons
- magic as a new system is available
- food has been completely overhauled
- quests now provide a sort of story through the world
- loads of “Quality of Life” improvements
Recently, there was a big update for the 5th anniversary with new weapons, cosmetics, decoration, and an engine upgrade. Version 1.0 will be released with the update “Deep North” and promises even more content, such as the namesake biome. The trailer gives a first look:
“What, the game didn’t have a 1.0 release yet?”
Although the end of Early Access has certainly brought much joy, the community of the Viking survival game is surprisingly quiet – possibly because Valheim has felt very finished since its initial release.
Despite its pixelated retro look, Valheim occupied the 4th place among the most played games on Steam at that time and sold over 5 million copies shortly after its release, and a few months later even over 10 million (via PC Gamer).
At the Early Access release, Valheim had over 500,000 players simultaneously, and even now there are still over 24,000 players daily at peak times. Accordingly, the news that Valheim is now coming in Version 1.0 is simply not that important to many fans:
Seriously, it feels like half the player base has forgotten that it’s still in Early Access. We’ve been playing it for so long; it could have just been finished lol.

Valheim has excited players early on with its gameplay, which is kept simple but strongly implements the core features of a survival game – even with “little things” like the possibility of being crushed by a fallen tree. It rightfully is one of the best survival games on the market.
