For years, Ubisoft has been working on a new battle royale game in the Ghost Recon setting. The upcoming Ghost Recon Frontline is expected to bring some fresh ideas to the genre, but many players are asking, “Has anyone asked for yet another new battle royale?”
What is Ghost Recon Frontline? This is an upcoming battle royale game in the Ghost Recon setting of the Tom Clancy universe. It is intended to be a free-to-play game and has been in development at Ubisoft Bucharest for three years.
The game revolves around multiple teams of three competing for valuable information and escaping in the end.
To differentiate from competitors like Warzone and Apex Legends, the developers have selected some special features, but the first trailer has been received poorly by the target audience.
Ghost Recon Frontline – Good Ideas but Little Interest from Players
What are the special features? Ghost Recon Frontline features a game mode with 102 players landing on Drakemoor Island in up to 34 teams of three. They are to retrieve valuable information and then escape.
The hunt for information, where players are expected to gather, takes the place of the usual death zones found in BR games. When a team has collected enough information, extraction is initiated, and a very loud and visible helicopter is ready to pick up a team.
Then, it’s important to show up in time and not be ambushed by another team. This mechanic is somewhat reminiscent of the popular shooter Hunt: Showdown, where everything can get very tight at the end as well.
There will also be three classes for your soldiers: a scout who reveals enemies, a shooting assault class, and a supporter who drops turrets and cover onto the battlefield via air drop. You can switch these classes at any time during the game. You should also be able to customize the classes freely.
What are the community reactions? The reactions to the first reveal trailer of Frontline were terrible. The video has over 11,000 dislikes on YouTube with only about 2.4 thousand likes (as of October 6, 2021). This is worse than the similarly unpopular reveal of xDefiant. Fans are especially complaining that no one wanted another battle royale game.
Additionally, the market is already heavily saturated, with established top games like Apex Legends, Fortnite, and CoD Warzone already serving large parts of the genre.
Lastly, many players are also frustrated that new Tom Clancy games are being developed instead of finally listening to fans and creating a new Splinter Cell.
A player named Aurum TheBrave perfectly summarizes the mood on YouTube with the following sentence:
It’s really slowly ridiculous how often and how much they [Ubisoft] give players exactly what they don’t want.
When can you play it? If you still want to try the game and suspect a hidden gem of the battle royale genre, you can look forward to October 14, 2021. From then until October 24, there will be a beta.
