On the occasion of the 30th anniversary, Sony introduced a feature for the PS5 that was celebrated by the community. However, only for a limited time. Fans demanded that the feature should remain. Now, Sony responds to the community’s wish.
What feature is it about? For the 30th anniversary of the Japanese brand, Sony developed suitable themes for the PS5 that were meant to remind players of earlier PlayStation generations. Users could customize the appearance of their main menu in the style of the PS1, PS2, PS3, and PS4. Part of the anniversary design was also the well-known start animation along with the sound from the very first PlayStation generation.
The designs were released in December 2024 and were only supposed to be available for a limited time. This led fans to fight since the beginning to keep the feature (via Reddit). Today, on January 31st, it is here and the themes are disappearing from your consoles.
However, fans don’t have to be too sad because Sony confirms that the designs will return.
The Anniversary Designs Are Coming Back
This is what Sony says about it: In a post on x.com, Sony thanks the players for their feedback on the anniversary designs. It further states:
Due to the positive response to these 4 themes, we are working behind the scenes to offer these special designs again in the coming months. While there are no plans to create additional themes in the future, we look forward to celebrating the old PlayStation hardware with all of you.
At this time, it is unclear when or in what form the themes will return. However, in an interview with Game File, Sony confirmed that such design changes are now implemented much faster than they were during the previous console generations. This could mean that these and similar features may not be specifically planned at this time but could still play a role in the future.
How is this received by the community? Under the post, many fans express their happiness and share additional positive feedback. However, some also note that they wish the designs had never had to disappear in the first place since they are already here. Therefore, it would be easy to just leave them there.
Additionally, some commentators point out that this news does not mean the themes will stay permanently in the future. Some speculate that the designs might be available in the shop in the future or as part of a PS Plus subscription.
