Battle passes are a controversial topic in gaming. Many major games, whether F2P or not, have one, and they seem to be successful despite the negative connotation. League of Legends regularly offers players a battle pass. However, it is set to be downgraded in the next event, which players are not pleased about.
The LoL battle pass always thematically adapts to an event or a new skin line, currently, the Worlds-2023 pass is running out.
- The event passes always cost 1650 RP, which is approximately 15 €
- In addition, there are larger packages that grant you a new skin on top
- In the pass itself, you can unlock a token currency, resources such as blue and orange essences, and all sorts of cosmetic items and loot boxes
- With the tokens, you can buy various loot boxes, keys, resources, or mythical essences and special prestige skins
In previous event passes, there were also 2 grab bags, which you could also get from the event loot boxes with some luck. These bags contain 3 skin shards and possibly additional items. You can activate the skin shards with orange essences or simply sacrifice 3 to get a random permanent skin.
These grab bags are, alongside the mythical essences, one of the most valuable prizes from the event pass. However, in the upcoming pass, 1 grab bag and 625 orange essences have been removed, which players are not happy about. This nerf
is not being received well in the LoL community and is, following the €200 skin outcry, the next point of criticism from players on reddit regarding Riot’s monetization.

Especially the replacement with banners is not seen as equivalent by most. The banners are a cosmetic item that beautifies your profile a bit. Players do not see a banner for the Winterblessed event as problematic, but getting 3 as a replacement for 3 skin shards and 625 orange essences is seen by many as a nerf

The TFT pass is also criticized by user RedFoxMusic. They believe this pass has also gotten worse.
Despite the huge hype of Worlds 2023 and the positively received simple champions that have been released this year, Riot is moving in a monetization direction that many players do not like.
