Total War: Warhammer 3
Here comes quite a hefty hit. Total War: Warhammer 3 is the latest installment in the Warhammer series for the Total War games, known for their blend of turn-based strategy and real-time battles with hundreds to thousands of units.
If you are interested in the lore of Warhammer Fantasy, you will likely find an equally good entry point in another game like Total War: Warhammer 3. Through the “Immortal Empires” mode, you have access to the entire world map with all factions.
Through flavor texts in the game, you can obtain information about units and races and learn who can bear each other the least and why. If you also own the predecessors, you can even play the factions yourself.
With nearly 20,000 players on average on Steam, Warhammer 3 is by far the largest Total War and continues to receive free updates and DLCs with new content. However, you can only play this strategy game on PC and Mac. Console versions are currently not planned.
Inquisitor: Martyr
If you like games like Diablo, Warhammer 40,000 Inquisitor: Martyr is the perfect entry point for you into the dark world. In this action RPG, you play as an Inquisitor of the Imperium of Mankind, who is supposed to exterminate a Chaos corruption.
In the campaign or individual missions, you control your character in isometric perspective (“from above”) using various skills and weapons and even utilize a cover system. Various classes with different play styles are available for selection.
When it comes to the story, Inquisitor: Martyr requires a bit more prior knowledge than other games for understanding. If you want to understand all the details, you need to know who the Inquisition is, who the Emperor is, and what makes the Caligari sector so special.
However, you can still have fun without prior knowledge. Inquisitor: Martyr is one of the best alternatives to Diablo and has significantly improved over the years. You can now play in co-op and have missions after the campaign for higher replay value.
Downside: New content and classes are usually behind paid DLCs. However, for the pure gameplay and the various characters, it is worth taking a look. Inquisitor: Martyr is available for Steam, Xbox, and PS5.
Rogue Trader
If you enjoyed Baldur’s Gate 3, Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader is ideal for you to start with Warhammer. The game adapts the namesake pen & paper rule system and lets you play as a rogue trader.
Rogue traders are powerful rulers who are supposed to expand the empire in the name of the Emperor and explore new territories. For this purpose, they are permitted to use questionable methods that would lead to “normal” citizens being accused of heresy.
Rogue Trader is a classic computer RPG (“CRPG”) that you play turn-based and in isometric perspective. Key features include:
- an immensely deep story with much insight into the lore of Warhammer 40,000
- companions with their own characters, with whom you can even enter a romance
- various classes and backgrounds to shape your character
- tactical gameplay that utilizes magic, ranged and melee weapons as well as cover
The developer Owlcat is known for releasing games that are somewhat unpolished at launch. However, the game has been available for a year now, and most bugs have been fixed. You can play Rogue Trader solo or in co-op; it is available for Steam, Mac, Xbox, and PS5.
Rogue Trader even has its first DLC with new content. With Void Shadow, you receive around 20 hours of additional content, a new story, and a new companion – and even a feature that lets you dive deeper into the world: The Warhammer 40k RPG on Steam gives me as a fan exactly what I miss in Space Marine 2
