Rumpelstiltskin actually seems like quite a failure who has an insatiable hunger for power. To gain his position as dictator of Far Far Away, he tricked Shrek, who was so annoyed this time that he just wanted peace and his swamp.
Shrek gave him one day of his life, in which Rumpelstiltskin simply took the day of his birth. This created an alternate timeline in which Fiona’s parents gave Rumpelstiltskin their kingdom so that he would rescue Fiona (which Shrek would have done).
That is an enormous power, after all, the villain can change reality. But there is a problem: His hunger for power makes him reckless. Furthermore, he has to draft contracts that he imposes on other characters, which limits the applications of his magic.
