Indie developer studios are particularly struggling to compete against the competition in the gaming industry. Thus, the developer of a gaming gem on Steam had to make a sad announcement.
Who is it about? The indie developer studio Die Gute Fabrik has been around since 2008 and is based in Denmark. Their focus is primarily on narrative-driven adventure games inspired by stencil printing techniques.
Their games include Mutazione, which was released in 2019, as well as their latest project Saltsea Chronicles.
You can get an impression from the trailer of Mutazione:
A Mutant Soap Opera
The most well-known game from the developer studio, Mutazione, is a relaxing adventure game that combines small-town gossip with supernatural mysteries.
You accompany 15-year-old Kai, who travels to the remote community of Mutazione to visit his ailing grandfather. Due to a strange meteor, the local inhabitants were turned into mutants a long time ago. However, typical small-town dramas have now also made their way into the place.
The game features a hand-illustrated world and a story with dramatic twists.
How is the game received? On Steam, the game currently has 95% positive reviews, with nearly 850 reviews. Thus, Mutazione is a real hidden gem on Steam for fans of relaxing story-driven games.
“Production Halted”
Despite the love from their player base, Die Gute Fabrik has now announced that they will “halt production”. The current funding and investment situation is just too difficult, especially for smaller studios and projects.
On X they share a statement indicating that they stopped their work in mid-February. Until mid-March, they plan to continue paying their team so they can calmly look for new jobs.
Here you can find the entire statement in English:
What happens to the games now? Furthermore, Die Gute Fabrik explains in their post that they want to continue supporting their existing games. They also do not rule out resuming work in the future should the financial situation change.
What are the reactions? In the comments, fans express their sadness over the closure of the developer studio.
- “Oh man. You are all so damn great and I love all your games. This sucks so much.” (jonmgibson)
- “Oh no! My heart is broken, but I am forever inspired by what you have done (and how you did it). I wish the entire team all the best and hope for a comeback soon.” (molleindustria)
Unfortunately, the fate of Die Gute Fabrik is not an isolated case. Similar difficulties were faced by the German developer studio Mimimi Games. After three great games, they too halted their work. Here’s what’s behind it:
