After Alien, director Ridley Scott has now rightfully earned the second place on this list. With Blade Runner, he stepped into the footsteps of Metropolis, yet found a completely unique identity.
Based on the novel “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?” by author Philip K. Dick, the film depicts the Los Angeles of the “future” – from our perspective, it is already the past, as the story takes place in 2019. So-called blade runners are hunting down replicants, artificial humans that could pose a threat to humanity.
The atmosphere of the world, which is mostly dark, foggy, and rainy, has hardly been surpassed. Exciting, philosophical questions intersect with ambiguously drawn characters in the plot. In general, Blade Runner was groundbreaking for the sub-genre of cyberpunk. The sequel 2049 is also highly recommended, but does not reach the depth and intensity of the first part.
