Solaris was the Russian response to 2001. In it, a psychologist also embarks on a journey through space. The target is the planet Solaris. Upon arriving at the space station, chaos seems to have broken out.
The stationed scientists are partly dead, partly they seem confused. When a mysterious woman appears, it becomes clear: On board the station, people are haunted by their memories.
Solaris is based on the novel of the same name by Stanisław Lem and, compared to 2001, is significantly more reduced. It tells an intimate story of individual people, less so of humanity as a whole. The film features Tarkovsky’s typical slowness, poetic imagery, and classical music. It is a real experience – for all those who are willing to embrace it. In 2002, a somewhat weaker remake followed.
