One of the most influential and important science fiction films of all time comes from Germany. Fritz Lang shows a future city where people are divided into two very different classes.
Above, the rich live in great luxury, below, the poor labor between hissing machines. Much of what you find in Metropolis is recognizable from other films, for example in how the city is depicted. The Machine-Man, who also adorns many posters, bears a suspicious resemblance to C-3PO from Star Wars, which is probably no coincidence.
The influence of Metropolis, such as its political message about oppression, technology, and utopian society, can be felt throughout the genre. Later films like Blade Runner, The Fifth Element, or Brazil likely would not have come into being without Metropolis.
