Alien shows well how the mix of science fiction and horror can succeed. The film takes the classic space scenario and throws the characters surrounding protagonist Ellen Ripley into a dire situation: A creature-like alien bursts from the chest of a crew member aboard their space freighter Nostromo.
Shortly thereafter, the beast has matured and makes quick work of the humans. Alien develops a highly threatening atmosphere over its runtime, and it does so with simple means. The alien could be lurking around any corner, and help from outside is not to be expected. Just like the film’s slogan: “In space, no one can hear you scream.”.
Even though Alien has received several sequels, none approach the intensity and sci-fi horror of the original. However, action fans still have fun with the second installment, since it was directed by James Cameron.
