With a new patent from Sony, they want to combine AI and advertising, but whether this will actually come to the PS6 remains questionable.
What is this new patent? Sony has registered a new AI feature as a patent. The AI is supposed to recognize when your PlayStation is loading and display advertisements on the loading screen. The advertising could promise new revenue for Sony, but it is also controversial.
Early in video game history, there were attempts to incorporate advertising into games. However, gamers’ attitudes have changed since then. For example, looking towards Fortnite, there are now countless collaborations with brands that offer their own skins or maps in the community area.
However, the advertising that Sony is planning seems to lean more towards traditional video advertisements, running as long as you are loading the next level.
The Patent for Making Money
What is this patent? The developers at Sony have registered a technique in the patent that calculates via AI how long the loading screen will last and then can cover part of the screen with another form of content.
This could theoretically be a guide or help for the upcoming level instead of an advertisement, but it is more likely to be a short ad that partly covers your screen.
According to a drawing that you can see on gamerant.com, not only loading screens are affected, but also when you are waiting for other players in a Battle Royale lobby, for example.
How likely is it to come with the PS6? So far, it is unclear whether Sony actually plans to use the patent at all. Especially among the major console manufacturers, there are countless patents that have been registered but never implemented.
Sony has to weigh the revenue against the uproar of players, as they notoriously do not want to watch another advertisement before they can continue playing.
However, it would also be conceivable to have a kind of advertising edition of the PS6. This is already known from Amazon’s e-readers and tablets, which display advertisements but are a bit cheaper to purchase.
If Sony were to release a cheaper PS6 with advertising, would that interest you or would you pay more to get rid of the ads? Feel free to write it in the comments! Everything about the new PS6 can be found here: When will the PS6 be released? Everything we know about Sony’s PlayStation 6
