The Twitch streamer Lacari was determined to get a specific character in the co-op RPG Genshin Impact. He even spent $2,000 for it. When he finally got it, he completely lost his mind with joy.
What happened? In Genshin Impact, certain characters can only be unlocked through a gacha system. This works similarly to loot boxes and has only a small chance of getting the desired character.
With the premium currency Fates, you can buy the so-called “Wishes”. You earn this currency in small amounts in-game, but you can also purchase it with real money. The latter is easier and faster.
The streamer Lacari was on the hunt for Keqing, a character that is in the A-tier in our tier list.
How did the hunt go? After Lacari had spent $1,500, his friends started teasing him during the stream. One of them said:
Lacari, do you know what the odds are of getting a 5-star character? It’s 0.6%.
Another participant in the stream also called him a “Fucking loser” for spending so much money.

What happened next? Lacari kept spending money and invested a total of $2,000 in the otherwise free game. He continually hoped and begged to get his desired character.
Then, he got lucky and received Keqing.
In sheer joy, the streamer could barely contain himself; he screamed and jumped out of his chair. He celebrated the unlock for over 30 seconds.
Why is he spending so much money? Genshin Impact is an RPG that can be played solo or cooperatively with friends. The game offers no PvP and has otherwise few contents that require everything to be unlocked.
Yet, some players still have the desire to obtain all content. This is one of the reasons why Free2Play games are often seen as traps for spending money. They obscure costs and hide content for which payment is required later. However, even if these things can be grinded in-game, some choose to take the shortcut via real money. After all, time is also a precious commodity.
The streamer Lacari is also not an isolated case. In Fortnite, a player spent $1,500 to then get a mythical hero – but the wrong one.
