Over 5000 players log in every minute to Sea of Thieves and break the beta records of the pirate adventure. This led to a bumpy launch with some problems.

The launch for Sea of Thieves was not easy; one could speak of rough seas into which the launch ship set sail. At the global launch, the servers buckled under the pressure. It even got to the point where the team eventually had to close the doors and let no one in.

However, when you look at the number of players wanting to log in at the same time, it’s no wonder.

Server problems increased as new regions were added

Disconnects, matchmaking problems, and login difficulties were among the initial issues of Sea of Thieves. On Monday, March 19, the rollout of Sea of Thieves began according to German time. The game was gradually released for different regions. Players got creative here and pretended to be Australians to be able to play before the release at midnight in Germany.

After the game was unlocked for North America, the server issues began. The Twitter account of Sea of Thieves quickly announced that the servers were indeed struggling.

It was Tuesday morning when pre-order players from North America stormed the servers simultaneously. Through the preload, they all tried to log in right on time for the launch. When more players came home from school in the afternoon and the first players logged in after work, everything got worse. Even more load for the servers. More problems arose in the game.

The high player numbers are also due to the fact that you can play the game for free through Game Pass or for €10 a month. However, these users did not have a preload and could only download the game after the official release. When the first wave of these players also wanted to access the servers, the developers had to shut the door.

New players now initially had no access to the game so that active pirates in Sea of Thieves could continue playing.

Over 1 Million Unique Users in 48 Hours

In a video about the launch status, the developers explain what a huge influx of players is hitting the servers of Sea of Thieves. “At one point, our server engineer said that 5000 people were coming into the game per minute,” explains studio head Craig Duncan. More than a million unique users logged in during the first 48 hours.

Through the scale tests, they had already been able to recognize when the peak times are, but the developers did not expect such high player numbers.

They explain that between 10:00 AM and 3:00 PM are the peak times for Sea of Thieves. At this time, most players want to log in to the game, and problems occur regularly. The player numbers are up to 4 times higher than the best beta times of the game.

They are now working to keep the servers stable even during these peak times.

Finding Chickens in Sea of Thieves – Hope for Randomness

We would love to tell you an exact location where the chickens can be found, but we cannot. They spawn randomly somewhere on the islands, just like other animals.

There is no island that is guaranteed to have chickens in Sea of Thieves. According to player reports, the chance of finding chickens is higher on islands that offer much flat terrain, but these are just speculations so far.

Even on the island “Chicken Island”, there is no guarantee of having the namesake inhabitants. So you have to go island by island and keep an eye out for the chickens.

Getting a Chicken Coop – Here’s where to get the Chicken Coop

When you go searching for chickens for the first time, you will quickly notice a problem: How do you catch a chicken once you’ve found one?

To get a chicken coop, you first need to go to the trading post and accept a quest for chickens there. After that, head to your ship, where you propose this voyage. Once all crew members have agreed and the voyage is active, return to the trading post NPC.

There you will now be handed the chicken coops you need to catch the chickens. Remember that you often need several cages. You have to bring them individually from the NPC to the ship. Each coop can only hold one chicken.

Before the voyage was proposed and accepted by the crew, there is no chicken coop available from the NPC.

Now you are ready to hunt the wild chickens.

Catching Chickens in Sea of Thieves – How does it work?

Go to any island and keep an eye out for chickens. First, make sure by reading the map what kind of chicken you are supposed to catch. They come in different colors. Once you arrive on an island and have dropped anchor, it’s best to take a coop with you directly to save yourself a trip if you encounter chickens.

Found a chicken? Then rush after the animal with the coop in your hands. If you are close enough, a hint will appear in the game showing you which type of chicken is in front of you.

If you found the right chicken, you have to chase it for a few seconds while holding down the corresponding hotkey that is displayed to you in the game. On PC, this is the left mouse button (on the controller, probably A?). If you manage to keep the chicken closely followed for a few seconds while holding the hotkey, you will automatically catch it.

Once the chicken is in the coop, head back to the ship. But be careful: Don’t dive! The feathered creature struggles with that and sounds like it won’t be having fun for long. So keep it above water.

Once you’ve collected your delivery, make sure which outpost you need to take it to and that you really caught the right chickens. Both are written on the order paper. If a wrong chicken is in the cage, you can kill it with your weapons and look for a replacement.

Once you arrive at the correct outpost, you can sell the animals to the trading post NPC there.

You want to play Sea of Thieves solo? It’s not that hard. Stick to our survival and control tricks and get rewarded.

There are many reasons why someone might want to play Sea of Thieves solo. Some players see themselves as a lone wolf, wanting to achieve their adventures and successes on their own. But there are also moments when one simply doesn’t feel like playing with a group. It’s better to just float along alone, perhaps listening to music or watching a stream.

As a solo player, you are outnumbered by enemy ship crews. However, with these tips, you can still navigate the game successfully.

Let’s go! – Preparation and sailing

Before each adventure, it’s helpful to take as much material as possible from the starting outpost. Bananas, planks, and cannonballs are extremely important and can be stored on your ship. Having a handful more planks in the hold can save your ship from sinking.

It’s best to load your cannons with ammunition on board right away. This way, you are prepared in case a fight occurs.

Set sail and stay on course

Once you’ve made all the preparations and are on your way to your first treasure, it’s important to handle your ship well.

• Sail length
  • With the sails fully deployed, you can reach high speeds, but you maneuver more slowly.
  • If the sails are retracted, you can make particularly tight turns, but you have little speed

    

• Reading the map while sailing
  • Position the overview map in the captain’s cabin so that you can see the ship and your target at a glance.
  • There’s no need to run below deck to see if you’re on course. Just look at the deck behind the anchor; you’ll see the map there. If that is too imprecise for you, the telescope can help.

Land in sight – Approach slowly and loot

On your journeys, you must always dock at new islands to search for the desired loot. However, approach the islands with caution so that your ship does not take damage. As you approach the island, it’s best to pull the sails up to half or a quarter mast. You need to calculate about two seconds before the boat stops for the anchor throw.

For a particularly cool stop, turn the rudder all the way to the right or all the way to the left and then drop the anchor. Your boat will make a 180° turn. There’s even an achievement for such a turn-around maneuver. You can see all achievements in Sea of Thieves in our overview

After your ship has come to a stop, hoist the sails completely and raise the anchor again. Use the rudder to turn your boat into the right position for a quick escape.

Before stepping onto the island, make sure to check the ammunition chest again for safety and look with the telescope for enemy ships in the vicinity. If everything is clear, you can go loot.

Ship against ship – Against groups, you are faster

The disadvantage in combat as a solo player becomes apparent against large crews of 3 or 4 people. Therefore, many solo players completely avoid combat here and try to flee. To make this work, keep the following tips in mind:

• If a galleon is chasing you, steer your boat directly into the wind so that the wind comes against you. Fully swing your sail to one side, either all the way left or all the way right. This way, you’ll be faster than the galleon and can easily escape.
• Against other sloops, it’s best to take cover behind islands with mountains so the opponents lose sight of you.

  

If you love excitement and want to test your luck against a galleon, it’s best to circle around it. While you’re making circles, shoot at them with the cannons.

In combat against other sloops, try to maintain distance so that neither of the two persons can board you. You would recognize that by the splashing of the water when a player jumps into the sea.

General tips for Sea of Thieves

In close combat, a sword is often the better choice because you can strike more quickly without having to wait for reloads. In fights against other players and skeletons, it is always important to keep moving. This way, skeletons can’t surround you, and players have a harder time aiming at you.

Try not to fight in the water, but stay on land (or on the ship). If you are wounded, try to hide to eat bananas and heal yourself.

If you are docking at an island, it’s usually a good idea to raise the anchor again. One exception exists when you are in the middle of a storm and the ship could drift away. To escape, it is always faster to drop the sails than to haul in the anchor.

Don’t worry if you fall overboard while your ship continues to sail calmly. A friendly mermaid (or merman) will quickly appear nearby and teleport you back to the ship. You can recognize this supportive swimmer by a sound and a distinctive torch.
