With the patch “Our Guiding Star”, a new armor set has been added to Guild Wars 2. However, this set is currently absurdly expensive due to a component. The required “Sigil of Erasure” can only be earned through three complicated methods. Players of Guild Wars 2 are discussing this heatedly.
Why is the Requiem armor so expensive? The newly added armor set with the patch “Our Guiding Star” requires 25 Superior Sigils of Erasure to craft. Their prices have exploded since the release of the patch.
While they only cost 2.5 silver before September 18, you now have to invest nearly 11 gold per sigil. This alone drives the price of the new armor over 275 gold.
Additionally, you need other materials like Ectoplasm Orbs, Nebulium Shards, and Transient Magic. The total cost amounts to about 335 gold, with the sigils making up the lion’s share.
The community discusses the new armor heatedly
The community is divided: In the first days, there was much discussion on Reddit about the new sigil. Reddit user choco-muffin was the first to report on the dilemma. Many users expressed their outrage over the change in this post.
It has since quieted down and many players hope that ArenaNet will make a change. Constructive suggestions have now dominated, such as using another sigil, for example from the dungeons, so that these can be actively farmed again.
Other players are also satisfied with the current costs. A basic version of the armor can be earned without using gold. Those who want the upgraded version with additional effects feel they should be willing to invest some gold.
Here’s how to get the expensive armor
How do I get the Sigil of Erasure? The big problem with the required sigil is that you can’t just earn it. Other sigils can, for example, be earned through dungeons or crafted. However, Superior Sigils of Erasure can only be obtained through the following methods:
- Combine yellow sigils in the Mystic Forge
- With luck from various rare weapons
- Through the level-up reward at level 64
Combining the sigil in the forge is purely a game of chance. Four yellow sigils have a 20% chance of producing an exotic. Of which, there are over 60 different types, making the chance of obtaining a Sigil of Erasure extremely low.
How to get so much gold in Guild Wars 2? You could also try to earn gold on the side. The currently required 335 gold can be earned as a casual player through daily logins, daily achievements, and farming fractals, Istan, or iron ore in just a few weeks.
Various rare weapons automatically come with the sigil when dropped by an enemy. However, none of the weapons can be specifically farmed.
The only sure way is to level a character to level 64. You get the sigil as a reward automatically. You can perfectly use the scrolls you receive on each birthday to instantly level a character to a specific level.
These scrolls vary by birthday for levels 20, 30, 40, 50, and since this year also to 60. It’s best to combine leveling with playing the story chapters to also passively earn a Black Lion key at levels 10, 40, and 60.
However, you should be cautious with tomes of knowledge. These can be converted into gold significantly better through the Mystic Forge or when sold to guilds than by exchanging for one of the sigils. Moreover, you need over 1,500 tomes for all 25 Sigils of Erasure.
What else is tedious? The 375 Nebulium shards must first be farmed on the new map. You can buy these from heart vendors, collect them by mining ores, or earn them by completing special events.
Additionally, you must complete two collections: one for the previous Elegy armor and a two-part collection for the Requiem armor.

Will it stay this expensive?
Will the costs remain this high in the future? Currently, the armor is very new, and many players want to earn it as quickly as possible. Some speculators also struck as soon as the materials were announced and bought up the stock of sigils.
Whereas there were over 22,000 of them in the trading post before the patch, the number is now down to about 800. These players are of course trying to make the maximum profit from the new armor.
Over time, the hype will die down, and costs are expected to drop again. However, the sigils will not fall back down to 2.5 silver. So if you do not urgently want the armor right now, you should just wait a bit and maybe level up a character or two in the meantime.
