Allied races in World of Warcraft will soon outnumber “real” races. But this is annoying the players. They demand: More customization options for the old races.
With a new expansion in World of Warcraft, you know what you are getting. There are new areas, new raids, and in the past, there have always been new allied races. In Dragonflight, there were the Dracthyr, in The War Within the Earthen, and with Midnight, the Haranir are coming. However, the community seems to be getting fed up with it and says:
Fewer allied races, but more for the already existing ones, please.

What kind of discussion is being held? A look at community platforms shows that “allied races” are often a reason for long discussions. What started as a cool feature seems to have turned into a point on a checklist that just has to be fulfilled. A new race is introduced in the story? Then it’s just a matter of time before it appears as an allied race – and naturally joins both Horde and Alliance.
This is annoying some people now, as this “race inflation” seems to also lead to existing races no longer receiving new customizations.
The Void Elves and Lightforged were well received – after that, interest rapidly declined.
What is the problem with the customizations? When you look at the customizations for the various races – whether allied or “classic” – it becomes quite obvious that some races have much more options than others. For example, female night elves or even Dracthyr have almost countless customizations, while goblins or the nightborne can only choose a handful of options across all categories.
This dissatisfaction with the lack of variety and “more and more new allied races” is particularly evident in the WoW subreddit. For months, posts with hundreds or even thousands of upvotes have been appearing here, complaining about exactly that. Here are some extracts from the comments and opinions:
“All the new allied races in the game are starting to feel redundant. Most new races never capture the essence of the old races. The only exception here are the Void Elves, who are basically just Blood Elves for the Alliance, while the nightborne (night elves for the Horde) have a lot fewer options and customizations in direct comparison. […] In general, I think the races need a major update, while the new allied races are totally underwhelming from a player’s perspective unless you’re a nice elf with tentacles.” – Korderon on Reddit
“With all due respect to the Earthen and the Haranir, but I’m getting tired of getting weak reskins of existing races that are supposed to serve as a sales argument. They feel so tacked on. And because these races were just introduced into the story 5 minutes ago, I also find it hard to look forward to playing them. […] I understand why Blizzard prefers reskins: Because new, unique races like Naga, Ogres, or Tuskarr would mean they have to adjust 20 years’ worth of armor for them.
