Suddenly, thousands of players are diving into a 9-year-old action game on Steam, which lures with a special setting – the Stone Age.
Which game is being referred to? Currently, there is probably only one action game that matches this description, and that is Far Cry Primal. This installment of Ubisoft’s popular Far Cry series was released in March 2016. The game is already about 9 years old.
Until now, it seemed like Ubisoft had forgotten its trip to the Stone Age. In previous sales for the franchise, many older titles were heavily discounted, but Primal rarely made an appearance. When it did, the discount was usually hardly worth mentioning.
In the current autumn sale on Steam, things are looking different: Far Cry Primal is now available with a hefty 90% discount, for only €2.99. For this price, you get an innovative action game.

Pure immersion in Stone Age Europe
What is the game about? You are Takkar, a man from the Wenja tribe. This is a fictional tribe of nomads living in Central Europe during the Stone Age. Already in the first few minutes of gameplay, Far Cry Primal fully exploits its setting:
- You will be addressed directly in a foreign language from the first person. Ubisoft, together with two linguists, developed a kind of “Proto-Proto-Indo-European” – a language that people could have spoken in this region of the world back then.
- Your first task is to hunt a mammoth with a group of hunters. You sneak carefully among the giants to select one for the hunt. You can take down the beast with spears that you throw or (at your own risk) use in close combat.
After your mammoth hunt comes to an unexpected end, you find yourself in the land of Oros. In this wild valley live not only Wenja but also other tribes like the Udam, who resemble Neanderthals in stature, and the sun-worshiping Izila.
Your goal is to give the Wenja a home in Oros. To do this, you search the wilderness for Wenja in need and expand your village with resources you gather in the world. Throughout the story, you protect your tribe from the dangers posed by the Udam and the Izila. Along the way, you meet characters, some more outrageous than others – just as is typical for the Far Cry series.
In the first few hours of gameplay, you will also prove yourself as a beastmaster. Here, the companion feature, which future Far Cry games have adopted, shone:
- At the beginning, you tame “smaller” animals such as wolves or wild dogs, but later also powerful saber-toothed tigers and cave bears.
- If you find an animal that you want to add to your collection, you just need to have unlocked the right ability and have bait ready.
The animal companions help significantly in combat. Larger animals like saber-toothed tigers and bears can even be ridden.
Primal enjoys thousands of players
Far Cry Primal gains thousands of new players overnight: Thanks to the generous sale, the game has experienced a massive increase in players over the past few days.
- While the game recorded around 450 concurrent players in recent months (not bad for a 9-year-old single-player story game), on October 2nd, it had already surpassed 6,000 (according to steamdb.info).
The sale seems to have also convinced some who were previously hesitant.

- “I was really unsure about Primal because the setting was so different from all the other Far Cry games. In the end, I loved it and even got the Platinum for it,” writes MattyLatty210 (Reddit)
