PUBG: Battlegrounds is one of the most popular shooters on the market. Upon release, it almost single-handedly established the Battle Royale genre. PUBG excels especially due to intense and realistic firefights. However, this complexity also makes it difficult for beginners to get started.

What is PUBG: Battlegrounds?
How does PUBG work? In PUBG, up to 100 players play a match simultaneously. Each player starts in a plane that flies over the large map on a predetermined path.
You can decide when to jump out of the plane to land safely with a parachute. You land without equipment or weapons. Therefore, you should quickly search for guns, armor, healing, and other essentials.
After all: A Battle Royale is won by the last person or team standing. Patient and cautious players are often just as successful as those with the most kills.
What weapons are there?
In PUBG, there are numerous weapons that you can use. Due to the modern warfare setting of PUBG, these are primarily weapons known from games such as Call of Duty: Modern Warfare.
Also note that the ammunition types and available attachments differ between weapons and weapon categories. Each weapon thus requires its specific ammunition and compatible attachments.
The weapons are divided into the following categories:
- Assault Rifles:
- Strengths: These weapons are all-rounders. They can do a little bit of everything but do not dominate any niche as other weapons do. This makes them good for almost all situations, which can be a great advantage in an unpredictable Battle Royale.
- Weaknesses: As a downside, you quickly lose effectiveness with an assault rifle in extreme situations. At long range, you are significantly worse off than a DMR or a sniper rifle; in close combat, you are dominated by SMGs and shotguns.
- Ammunition types: 5.56mm, 7.62mm
- Weapons in this category: SCAR-L, M16A4, Groza, AKM, AUG A3, M416, QBZ95, Beryl M762, Mk47 Mutant, G36C, Beryl M762/zh
- DMRs:
- Strengths: DMRs are positioned between sniper rifles and assault rifles. They only fire a single bullet with each shot. They are often better than assault rifles at long range.
- Weaknesses: At the longest ranges, sniper rifles are easier to use—and deadlier. In close combat, DMRs are often a poor choice and should only be used as a last resort.
- Ammunition types: 5.56mm, 7.62mm, 9mm
- Weapons for this category: SKS, Mk14 EBR, Mini 14, SLR, QBU, VSS Vintorez
- SMGs:
- Strengths: Submachine guns dominate at close and often even medium ranges. The weapons in this category have many specific strengths—such as the Vector, which excels due to its high rate of fire, and the PP-19 Bizon due to its large magazine.
- Weaknesses: Against shotguns, you stand no chance at close ranges. And as soon as opponents are a bit further away, you should quickly switch to another weapon.
- Ammunition types: 9mm, .45 ACP
- Weapons for this category: Micro UZI, UMP45, Tommy Gun, Vector, PP-19 Bizon, MP5K
- Sniper Rifles:
- Strengths: Snipers dominate at the longest ranges. Particularly with headshots, you can often take down opponents with just one hit.
- Weaknesses: Snipers are useless if not fired with caution and patience from a great distance. Additionally, they are very difficult to use and require good aim.
- Ammunition types: .300, 7.62mm, .45 ACP
- Weapons for this category: AWM, M24, Karabiner 98 Kurz, Winchester Model 1894, Mosin Nagant
- LMGs:
- Strengths: LMGs are essentially assault rifles with more ammunition, higher rates of fire, and more damage.
- Weaknesses: To balance this, LMGs are significantly bulkier than assault rifles and are also poorer at long range. Additionally, they are very hungry for ammunition, which quickly becomes a problem in PUBG.
- Ammunition types: 5.56mm, 7.62mm
- Weapons for this category: DP-28, M249, MG3
- Shotguns:
- Strengths: Shotguns essentially have one strength, but it is immense: They are absolutely dominant in close combat and can destroy anything that stands in front of them in no time.
- Weaknesses: Shotguns have plenty of downsides: They are useless at range, often reload slowly, and usually punish poor aim immediately.
- Ammunition types: 12 Gauge
- Weapons for this category: S1897, S686, S12K, Sawed-off, DBS
- Pistols:
- Strengths: Pistols have their own weapon slot. Accordingly, they do not replace any of your larger weapons. They are mainly useful when you want to keep shooting with a smaller caliber instead of reloading your primary weapon.
- Weaknesses: Pistols are not particularly strong. Their ammunition can also take up space in your backpack if it is not used by one of the ‘big’ weapons.
- Ammunition types: 9mm, .45 ACP, 7.62mm
- Weapons for this category: P1911, P92, 9mm, R1895, P18C, R45, Flare Gun, Scorpion, Deagle
- Others: In addition to the mentioned categories, there are also special weapons like the crossbow and melee weapons like the sickle or machete.
How do armors work?
The vests and helmets you can pick up help you stay alive longer. Vests reduce damage to the upper body, while helmets reduce headshot damage. The exact numbers depend on the level of your armor.
Vests:
- Level 1 provides 30% damage reduction and can withstand up to 200 damage before the vest is destroyed.
- Level 2 provides 40% damage reduction and can withstand up to 220 damage before the vest is destroyed.
- Level 3 provides 55% damage reduction and can withstand up to 250 damage before the vest is destroyed.
Helmets:
- Level 1 provides 30% damage reduction and can withstand up to 80 damage before the helmet is destroyed.
- Level 2 provides 40% damage reduction and can withstand up to 150 damage before the helmet is destroyed.
- Level 3 provides 55% damage reduction and can withstand up to 230 damage before the helmet is destroyed.
What is the red and blue zone in PUBG?
What is the blue zone? To force players to move across the map during a match, there is a safe zone. This is marked by a white circle.
Players who do not stay in this zone are caught by a blue storm that continuously deals damage. Therefore, you cannot hide indefinitely in a building—unless you are lucky with the position of the safe zone.
The blue zone gradually consumes more of the map and deals more damage when you enter it (or were not able to run to safety quickly enough). Thus, the safe zone also gets smaller.
What is the red zone? The red zone marks an area that will be bombarded for a short time.
For about half a minute, the selected area of the map is bombarded. Even if you move out in the open in the zone, the chance of being hit is relatively low. However, you should try to avoid the risk as much as possible, as being hit by a bomb means instant death.
So try to leave this zone as quickly as possible or find safety in a building. Otherwise, you have to hope that you do not get unlucky.
What do the game modes FPP and TPP mean?
Before starting a PUBG match, you need to choose between FPP or TPP.
What does that mean?
- FPP: This stands for “First Person Perspective”. By choosing this, you play in first-person view, as you know it from most shooters.
- TPP: This stands for “Third Person Perspective”. Here, the camera is positioned behind your character, similar to what you find in Fortnite. With this over-the-shoulder view, you have a better view of the surroundings, but shooting can be harder.
Your choice depends only on your preferences. In no case will you have advantages or disadvantages, as your choice only determines the perspective in which all other players on the server will play.
