In 2022, there were some changes in the MMORPG The Elder Scrolls Online and the story featured the year-round adventure “Legacy of the Bretons”. But what is still missing in ESO? MyMMO author MiezeMelli has tackled this question and compiled some ideas.
2022 did not bring a new feature to the game unlike previous years. Instead, the companion system, which was introduced a year earlier, has been expanded by 2 more characters.
What are companions in ESO? The companions are NPCs (engl.: non-player characters) that you can unlock through a quest and then summon as allies in battle. If you want to learn more about it, check out our guide:
Additionally, with the High Isle chapter, a tavern game made its way into the MMORPG. Under the name “Fame Stories“, there is a card game.
However, a proper feature was missing this year, which many players lamented.
1. We really, really need more inventory space
When playing ESO, sooner or later you reach the point where your 200 or 400 (with ESO+ subscription) bank slots are well filled. With Homestead, housing was introduced, and together with that, a total of 4 storage chests with 60 slots each and 3 storage boxes with 30 slots each came into play.
That initially sounds like a lot of storage space. However, Zenimax adds a lot of new items to the game with each chapter or DLC. This includes a lot of housing items and new gear sets. Eventually, this amount of storage space will simply be used up.
Especially if you engage in housing in ESO, you know this problem well. It is not uncommon for ESO veterans to use entire houses or the inventory space of additional characters as storage. It is also a frequently asked question in Bethesda’s streams when more housing slots will be added and whether there will eventually be an extra inventory for housing items.
There has been an idea expressed multiple times that an additional housing inventory could be introduced, similar to the crafting bag. The crafting bag is obtained with the ESO+ subscription and it can hold unlimited crafting materials.
As a housing enthusiast ESO player, I know the storage problem all too well. My entire storage chests and boxes are stuffed with housing items, and even a huge home with a total of 700 slots serves only for storing housing items.
For an appropriate additional storage space, ESO players would be willing to invest real money or crowns. I can absolutely agree with that personally.
2. More interaction opportunities with the guild
Unfortunately, the guild system in ESO has changed little since release:
- You can join up to 5 different guilds.
- Each guild has its own guild chat.
And that’s pretty much it when it comes to interaction opportunities. Therefore, most guilds additionally organize themselves through external programs (mostly Discord) to undertake guild activities.
For an MMORPG, communication with other players is essential. Therefore, ESO should pay more attention to enhancing cooperative play through additional interaction opportunities within a guild.
3. Interesting rewards for reaching high CP
With the update, the champion point system in ESO was fundamentally revised and changed. The developers aimed to reduce the sum of passive improvements and percentage increases to combat stats.
Such values need to be calculated permanently with every action in combat and can therefore strain performance more. Since ESO has been struggling with server performance for some time, this was a measure to stabilize it.
At the same time, the experience required to level up champion points was significantly reduced. Initially, this was convenient for all types of players, but there is now a huge disadvantage:
After reaching a total of 1800 champion points, the character no longer becomes stronger. The reason for this is active champion points. You can select a maximum of 4 active champion points from each champion tree.
Furthermore, the number of passive champion points is limited, so at 1800 CP, you have allocated all possible passive CP. However, you can still reach a CP level of up to 3600 CP.
But it doesn’t bring any more benefits. And that is frustrating. Therefore, the developers should definitely come up with something for high CP levels. After all, a large part of the loyal and long-standing players are found there.
4. A good balance between beginner-friendly and consistent
In the past patches, the developers have focused on attracting new players. Unfortunately, some longtime players have been forgotten in the process. In some cases, extensive gameplay was even made less interesting.
This has caused quite a bit of discomfort in the veteran community, especially in the last 4 patches, and has triggered a wave where numerous long-standing players have stopped playing the MMORPG.
Of course, as game developers, you need to recruit new players. However, it is also important to cater to the existing players by ensuring that the more advanced content is also made interesting. Because what good are new players if they don’t stick around?
5. The old areas could use a bit of fresh air
While the new areas (especially shortly after release) are overrun by players, the old areas are nearly deserted. Many players would wish for the old areas to be revamped so that they become interesting to them again and provide an incentive to travel to the old areas.
The same applies to the dungeons from the base game, the older DLC dungeons, and the older trials. Because at the release of the content, there were entirely different requirements on the players.
Moreover, the maximum possible DPS in the MMORPG has continuously increased, so that bosses from old content can be wiped out so easily by experienced players that there is no longer a need to pay attention to the mechanics of the fight.
Since the maximum possible DPS has increased with nearly every patch, older content in ESO is no longer an incentive for experienced players.
With each chapter, a new trial is introduced into the game. However, this only happens once a year. For players who actively raid, it means another “waiting period” each year until the new chapter is released.
The old areas could be revitalized by guiding players back to the old areas through quest lines of the new chapters. Another idea is new world bosses that are adjusted to the current DPS.
With the Greymoor chapter, the graphics were also visibly improved. However, the old areas were left out of this visual enhancement. This would also present an opportunity to make the old areas interesting again.
6. Stable servers, better performance, and bug fixes
The well-known problem of server performance is, especially for longtime players, a very frustrating circumstance. This issue is particularly noticeable in trials and PvP.
In Cyrodiil (the large PvP area of ESO), the performance problems are so pronounced that many players feel that this content is sometimes unplayable. I unfortunately have to confirm this observation from my own experience.
Especially when many players confront each other in the PvP area, skills often activate with a delay or, in the worst case, not at all. This naturally diminishes the positive gaming experience.
7. Content designed for 2 players
In ESO, there is a choice between solo content, content for 4 players (dungeons and 2 arenas), and content for 12 players (trials). But what about content for 2 players?
I have often experienced that even the 4-player content sometimes fails due to organization or you end up waiting endlessly in the queue. And how often do you just hang out with a friend in Discord and wander somewhere in Tamriel?
I can also remember that during my early days in ESO, I was relatively shy and didn’t dare to join many people in a voice channel. I’m sure many players, especially ESO newcomers, feel the same way.
Content for 2 players would be perfect for that. Since there’s currently nothing like this in ESO, it would also bring fresh air to the MMORPG.
8. Please no more upheavals of the combat system
Since Update 32 Deadlands. This may not be significant for new ESO players, but especially for long-term players, these changes have met with resistance.
After all, the combat system is for many players THE reason they chose ESO as their MMORPG. Changing the combat system fundamentally 8 years after release is not easily understandable for many.
Especially Update 35 of ESO has caused a lot of criticism.
9. Since Elsweyr there has been no new class
One of the most common questions in the ESO stream from Bethesda is “When will a new class come?” Aside from the 4 classes included in the base game, there are also 2 additional classes that were added later.
The Warden was introduced with the Morrowind chapter in 2017. Two years later, the Necromancer was added with the Elsweyr chapter. Since then, there has been no new class.
