2023 had many successes, but also a big flop in the form of Redfall. The co-op shooter was supposed to be an exclusive title for Microsoft, developed by a talented studio. However, the game was unpopular among both critics and players, and nowadays hardly anyone seems to be playing it.
What is Redfall?
- Was supposed to be a major co-op shooter from Bethesda
- Arkane Studios developed the game and is also known for critics’ favorites like Dishonored or Deathloop
- The game flopped and many reviews punished the game
- It seems that the game has been abandoned by both the developer and the players
The game had problems from the start, and it seems that the number of players decreased steadily. Nowadays, there are hardly any players left for the online matches.
Looking at the data on SteamDB, you can see that the game had 6124 active players at release in early May. For a major release, this number is not really high, but it was mainly due to the simultaneous release in Game Pass. However, shortly after, player numbers plummeted to only 550 active players.
Looking at the last week, the game fluctuates between about 15 and 60 players, which is a catastrophic situation for an online co-op game. As MGG reports, the game had only 3 active players on September 29. With 3 players, you can’t even fill a co-op round.
The numbers here are of course only for Steam. The Xbox and Game Pass PC numbers are unknown. But even there, one can assume that the game is not thriving with players. As the game is still a full-price title, many potentially interested players are likely to be turned away.
Redfall was supposed to be one of the biggest titles for Microsoft, but the game quickly faded into obscurity. Ultimately, the game is now a forgotten title that could not compete with the flood of games in 2023, such as Baldur’s Gate 3 or Starfield.
What will happen to Redfall is still unknown. Hopefully, the game won’t meet the same fate as these titles:
We are in the 6th week of 2023, and 15 games have already been declared dead
