Hunter: The Reckoning returns and looks more brutal and terrifying in the new trailer than ever before. But the gameplay on Steam can do more than just scare.
What kind of game is it? Hunter: The Reckoning – Deathwish is an action RPG, expected to release in Q3 2027 on Steam, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S. The title is being developed by Teyon, the studio that recently delivered a real surprise hit with RoboCop: Rogue City, which also leaked their new project.
In Hunter: The Reckoning – Deathwish, you take on the role of an ordinary human in modern New York, whose life is turned upside down when an old childhood friend reappears. Suddenly, the truth is revealed to you: The world is full of real, bloodthirsty monsters lurking in the shadows.
As a newly minted monster hunter, you embark on a quest to hunt down werewolves, ghouls, and ancient vampires, but it’s not that easy.

More than just horror
What distinguishes the game? Hunter: The Reckoning – Deathwish focuses on RPG mechanics and a semi-open world. You can customize your character, but you also have to assign strengths and weaknesses to him.
Since you are facing overwhelming creatures as a human, pure firepower is often not enough. The game places great emphasis on detective work. You must spy, hack, steal, and intimidate suspects to uncover the weaknesses of your targets.
However, if you go too far, you’ll get into trouble with the police or even worse organizations that want to take you out. You can solve the game with brute force, through stealth, or with charisma in dialogues.
These elements have been deliberately chosen because the computer game is based on a pen & paper game that incorporates these values right from character creation.
What other elements are in the game? You are not alone, but gather with others in your hideout. There, you form a cell that you manage. However, your companions are also just humans and therefore mortal.
As you grow romantically closer to them, you risk their lives with every mission, and wrong decisions can lead to your friends or loved ones meeting a tragic end.
Preparation is very important. You can craft weapons in your base or acquire firearms on the black market to have any chance of survival in combat as humans.
How does the game differ from its predecessor? If you’re pondering the name, you’ve probably been gaming for quite some time. A game was already released in 2002 under the title Hunter: The Reckoning for Xbox and GameCube. However, the new version has almost nothing to do with the hack-and-slash gameplay of the past.
Hunter: The Reckoning – Deathwish is firmly based on the lore of the famous World of Darkness, a massive pen & paper universe that ranks among the best in the world. Well-known brands from the universe, such as Vampire: The Masquerade and Werewolf: The Apocalypse, have become even more popular in recent years.
In this universe, supernatural beings secretly pull the strings while humanity knows nothing about it. While in other titles of the universe you become one of these beings, Hunter: The Reckoning – Deathwish turns the tables and lets you, as a weak, mortal human, take on the monsters.
With Hunter: The Reckoning – Deathwish, a highlight for RPG fans and pen & paper lovers is coming to the market. However, it will still be some time until the release, which is expected to happen in summer 2027 at the earliest.
