We already know a lot about the upcoming expansion of World of Warcraft. And one thing is clear: Midnight does not end well.
The Alpha of World of Warcraft Midnight is already in full swing. Not only based on the playable quests, but also due to various achievements, a solid picture can already be assembled regarding how the story of Midnight will end. The first clues clearly indicate: This does not end well.
Spoiler Warning: This article discusses some of the story developments of the upcoming expansion Midnight. If you don’t want to know how the story unfolds, you should not continue reading.
Who found this? The YouTuber and analyst Bellular summarized the information from the Alpha in one of his latest videos. He also came across achievements that summarize the course of the endgame campaign – precisely because you can see the titles of the individual chapters. From this and other data mining information, one can already guess how the story of Midnight will unfold.
What was found? The endgame campaign of Midnight is called “The War of Light and Shadow”. This is something that has been hinted in the story of World of Warcraft for over a decade – a final confrontation between light and shadow.
But even more interesting are the chapter names that are part of this achievement. One chapter is called “The Darkwell”, which presumably translates to “Der Finsterbrunnen”. This leads to the assumption: The Sunwell is corrupted by the Void and becomes a source of darkness.
How exactly the well is corrupted seems to be clear already: Through Alleria Windrunner. She is one of the raid bosses in the upcoming expansion and from the dungeon journal, it is already indicated that the Void takes her over and she – at least temporarily – succumbs to madness. Enough time to corrupt the Sunwell.
This aligns with a quote that Xal’atath said back in Legion to priest characters when Alleria absorbed a fallen Naaru on Argus:
“The caterpillar became the butterfly. It now belongs fully to us.”
Whatever happens with the “Darkwell”, it is likely to pose a significant threat to the World Soul of Azeroth.
However, there is also the final chapter “Twilight of a New Well”. This could mean that the corrupted Sunwell is cleansed again after a short time – or the Elves create a new well that will serve as a source of magic for them in the future, as the Sunwell is no longer usable.
Keep in mind that this is still interpretation and data mining. The exact course of the campaign may change or deviate from what is written here.
What does this mean for the next expansion, The Last Titan? It only seems logical that we do not emerge as the great heroes in “Midnight”. This was also the case in The War Within. There we defeated Dimensius, but at the same time equipped Xal’atath with a lot of power.
As the dragon Iridikron is waiting for the Void to fulfill its plan so that the titans must return to Azeroth, from whom he seeks revenge, everything seems to be going according to plan. The various storylines of the last years are thus steering towards a finale that likely requires the defenders of Azeroth to lose first.
But others also lose in Midnight: Shadow Priests. Because their play style will become radically worse.
